Somehow today seemed like a good day to burn, to earn her punishment.

"Jason. Go home. Shower.” I shook my head when he started to rile up again. "Obviously your mouth and brain aren’t connecting.Go.”

"Fuck me. Hi, Sylvie.” Dylan appeared at my side like the not so sneaky motherfucker he was.

“Hi, Dylan.” Sylvie blushed and looked down at her shoes.

Dylan shifted uncomfortably.

I started between the pair of them. "Is there something here I need to know about besides all the other bullshit this morning?” I snapped.

Sylvie’s lips pursed and she looked ready to launch into a new tirade.

“Just doing my duty, boss,” Dylan grinned past me at her. She replied with a soft smile that lit her entire face, from those dark eyes and luscious waves to a faint flush that covered her cheeks.

“Not the time to flirt,” I growled, my gaze fixed on Sylvie.

“And not your place to tell either of us what to do, Beau. It’s not like you care about the people around you.” She held my gaze, defiance written across her stunning face. I dropped my gaze along her body, perusing those curves her jeans and white tank only emphasised. “Personal experience and all. And maybe keep your guard dog in check. He sounds like a real winner.”

“I didn’t do anything,” Dylan protested. “C’mon, Sylvie...”

“Not you, Big D.” She rolled her eyes. “Yourotheraggressive dude.”

“Donovan,” I murmured. I had to agree with her–he’d been out of line. “Noted.”

She huffed at me and swirled on her heel, striding away.

I watched her leave. “Big D?” I raised my eyebrows, emphasising each word.

Dylan backed off. "Because some of your boys have mothers, you know. Not that you’d know. You go for months without talking to the women in your life, right? Just like with Sylvie. That's a great way to foster a relationship."

I stared at her retreating form. “That's because there isn't any relationship." My voice was brittle. “You’re saying go after her?” I raked a hand through my hair.

“Yeah, man. She’s hurting. You left her hurting.” Dylan shrugged, but his words held a weight I didn't appreciate.

“And you know that how?” I snapped off the last syllable.

“Because we share a music room, man. She sings beautifully but it’s obvious she’s lost. Heartbroken. You just can’t see it.”

“Fuck.” I rubbed the back of my neck. “Shit. I’ll be back in a sec. Make sure the boys don’t get into a punch up.”

“Will do.”

His gaze weighed on my back as I jogged across the field. Hell, she’d gotten a decent distance away in a short period. “Sylvie,” I called when I was within arm’s reach. “Hold up.”

She never broke her stride. “I don’t want to talk to you.”

“But I need to say something to you.” I grazed her elbow, but didn’t try to hold her back.

Sylvie stopped her frantic stride. Liquid dark brown eyes told me she recognized the stagnant tension present between us as well as I did. “You promised I wouldn’t be alone.”

Dylan was right.

Goddammit.

I rolled my lips over my teeth. "I did my penance. Five straight days beside your hospital bed until you were stable. That's enough for me."

“Because you can’t stand it, can you?” She took a step closer.
