“I didn’t know what it was till I got there.”

“You didn’t know whatwhatwas?”

“The bodies,” he said, staring at her with a panicked look in his eyes.

Ethan tensed.

Her own hand tightened around the grip of the weapon.

“What do you mean?” she said sharply. “The bodies were in your car?”

“I didn’t know! I swear it. I didn’t. I swear on—on my own mother!”

She frowned at the man. He looked sick, the blood having left his face. “So you admit you had the bodies in the trunk of your car?”

He swallowed, glancing nervously from her to Ethan and back again.

“I was paid in cash. That’s all I know.”

“Who put you up to it?” Rachel demanded, her gaze locked onto the panicked man. “Tell us everything you know.”

“I-I can’t,” he stammered, his fear palpable. “Please, just let me go.”

Rachel’s glare bored into the man, her dark eyes unrelenting. She could sense his fear.

“Start with what you did,” she said, her tone ice-cold.

“Alright, alright,” he stammered, taking a deep breath. “I buried something out in the oil fields.”

“Buried what?” Ethan asked, crossing his arms over his chest.

“I didn’t know! I swear!” the man insisted, shaking his head frantically.

“Who told you to bury them?” she pressed, her voice like steel.

“I don’t know,” the man whispered, his gaze fixed on the dusty ground as he peered through his stalled vehicle’s open window.

“Tell us exactly what happened,” Rachel demanded, her mind racing as she tried to piece together the puzzle before her.

“Okay, okay,” he said, wiping the sweat from his brow. “Some guy came to the shop a few weeks ago. He offered me a lot of money if I’d bury some things for him out in the oil fields. He never told me what they were, just gave me the coordinates and said it had to be done at night. I didn’t ask questions. I just needed the money.”

Rachel clenched her fists, struggling to control her anger. Was he lying? He seemed genuine. But sociopaths could play the game when cornered.

“What did the man look like?”

“No clue.”

“I thought you said you met him.”

“He was in his car. Windows tinted, rolled up. We spoke through the glass.”

“What was the car like?”

“Buick. Engine modded.”

“License plate?”

He shook his head. “None. Temporary he said, but it was completely missing. Besides… after he told me what he wanted, I assumed he didn’t want anyone to know.”
