Still… she frowned, feeling a cold shiver.

The lawyer was still talking to her client, but that didn’t mean Rachel had to stand idly by.

Besides, they had the man’s phone.

The phone that had supposedly made the call.

She frowned in the direction of the tattooed fellow. Her eyes traced the neck tattoo, moving down to his sleeve.

She hesitated.

A date.

Important enough to etch indelibly on his skin…

She stared at the numbers. 12.12.

Did it mean anything?

More importantly…

Her eyes widened.

She felt a flicker of excitement.

Would it unlock his phone?

Important enough to tattoo meant important enough to remember. Boyd didn’t exactly seem like a brainiac.

She turned away from the mirror, moving swiftly now toward the evidence room, a hitch in her step.

CHAPTER TWENTY NINE

The man drummed his fingers against the steering wheel, watching as rain came down in sheets.

In one hand, he held a knife.

His pants were in the back seat.

He stared down at his thighs, frowning at the scars tracing the inside of his leg.

He tapped the knife against the old scars, slowly tracing the outline with the tip of the blade.

It caused shivers to creep along his back, a sort of giddy anticipation.

He traced the scars with practiced precision, knowing them intimately. His knife moved up and down in an undulating motion.

The drumming of the rain against his windshield gave him a brief surge of excitement.

He licked his lips.

Through the glass, through the doors, he spotted the police station.

They were all in there.

Squawking like a bunch of chickens. Squawking about him, no doubt.

He’d wanted to wait for this next target. Had wanted to give it time… It had taken so very long to set it all up, anyway.
