“Dad’s teaching his first day of summer school today, and Zane and Izzy and Caleb are over at the new winery building over there beyond the garage, unpacking supplies,” Amy answered, sitting at the table as she pointed out the window. “We’re going to have our first real summer’s end grape harvest, so we were planning on opening in less than a couple months. Dad thought we’d better start preparing. He doesn’t want anything to seem any different here than usual.”

“Hasn’t the winery already been open?” Lex asked, trying not to wolf down his food. Everything always tasted so good.

“We usually only open for about a month in the spring and then again in the fall. We serve the wine from our cousins’ vineyard in California. This will be the first year we’ll have our own wine to sample.”

“That sounds kind of interesting,” Lex replied.

Her grin was impish. “You mean you might be interested in sampling it?”

He snorted, finishing his breakfast. “How does everyone know about that?”

“The video cameras. Dad always goes through the footage once a month, but he’s going to be doing it more often in case anyone is still after you guys.”

Holding her gaze, Lex put down his fork, reaching for his coffee. Once he rested the cup back on the table, he asked, “Is there anything going on around here that you don’t already know?”

She pursed her lips. “Probably not.”

Lex laughed suddenly.

“Dad’s going to be tutoring you himself.”

Lex quit laughing.

“Don’t worry,” Amy reassured him. “He helped me for a while too.”

“I don’t ever remember going to school Amy. I can’t really read.”

She patted his hand. “That’s okay. I couldn’t either. I’ll help you, too.”

Lex grimaced. He felt like such a dummy. He wasn’t sure if he was even capable of learning.

“Don’t worry, Lex. That’s never going to help.” Amy smiled. “At least that’s what Mom and Dad always say.”

Shaking his head, Lex rolled his eyes upward.

“You know, you’re the only one who hasn’t picked out his room yet,” Amy observed, appearing thoughtful. “How about I show you the one that I think you’re going to like?”

Lex tried not to let her know how emotional that made him, the idea of making his stay here permanent. Although he’d been trying not to let it show, he’d still been feeling kind of left out.

“Shouldn’t we go outside and help unpack the supplies?” he asked.

Amy huffed out a breath. “Oh, that can wait. I want to see what you think.”

Now, Lex was curious. “What do you mean?”

“You’ll see. Grab your dishes and let’s put them in the dishwasher, and then we can head upstairs.”

Chapter Fifteen

The truth was, Amy had already chosen a room for Lex and had even started picking out items to fix it up.

Hopefully, he was going to like everything.

They had a lot of old furniture stashed in the room above the garage, and she’d even put Lex’s name on a few of the nicer items.

“Where are we going?” he asked as she led him up the main staircase.

“To the second floor. I thought you should have the larger bedroom down the hall from Harry’s. Zane picked the one at the end that overlooks the lake. We’ve been using it as a guest room.”
