“All right, five minutes,” I concede.

He sits at the bar stool and leans his muscular forearms on the counter, clasping his hands together.

“I don’t know where to start.”

I cross my arms and stare at the ceiling. “How about you go back to your room, think about it, and you can come back at the end of the school year?” I sass.

“Evelyn, look at me,” he demands.

I drop my chin and roll my eyes.

“I’m… I didn’t know that you were being… Um, no. That’s not right. Last year was…”

He closes his eyes and curses in frustration. When he opens them, I raise an eyebrow.

“His royal highness, King Caleb Alexander Astor, is at a loss for words.” I smirk.

He scowls, but there’s no animosity in his eyes. “You are the most difficult woman. I’m trying to be serious here.”

I look at my wrist. “Four minutes.”

His next words rush out of his mouth. “I’m sorry. It’s not easy to admit when I’m wrong, and I am saying that I was wrong.”

My eyes narrow, and I squeeze my biceps. Sorry just doesn’t seem like enough.

“Wrong about what exactly?” I question.

“Were you wrong when you called the police to pick me up at Micah’s? Were you wrong when you testified against me in court? And told the world that I habitually did illegal activities as if you weren’t with me for every single transgression? Or was it that you were wrong for having me jumped in a school bathroom and left naked and unconscious on the floor?”

“Evelyn—”

“No, Caleb. Sorry just doesn’t cut it.”

“You’re supposed to just be listening,” He growls.

I shake my head, pull out a shot glass, and grab the bottle of Hennessey from the cabinet as he continues.

“I was a sixteen-year-old boy with a broken heart. I thought you lied to me.”

I chug the alcohol and slam the glass on the counter.

“You were a twenty-year-old male when you left me on that floor,” I shout and then immediately lower my voice, remembering that Celeste might be sleeping.

“I can stretch the fact that you were a dumb kid who didn’t understand shit. And I’m sure that your testimony alone isn’t what got me convicted, but you weren’t a dumb kid last year. You were a grown ass fucking man.”

He squeezes his hands together, causing the veins in his forearms to stick out. He looks around the room and down the hallway before he continues in a harsh whisper.

“That was different. That was going to happen whether I was there or not. It was rush week and Genna had her sights on you. They were always going to use you as an initiation test. When I caught wind of what was going down, I had to play along so that we could be there.”

“Mentiras,” I whisper.

“It’s the truth! I wanted to make sure that they didn’t hurt you too badly,” he pleads.

“Right. So a baseball bat to my head wasnot too bad?” I say mockingly.

He stands up and walks around the counter. “You were my enemy, Evelyn. You showed up out of nowhere, you burned down my mom’s charity, and you lied to me. What was I supposed to do? Rescue you?”

He places two fingers under my chin, forcing me to look up at him. “I’m sorry. I say that I’m sorry. I can’t take any of it back. What do you want me to do?”
