The entire kitchen is enveloped in the smell of cloves and leather, reminding me so much of home. I stare into Caleb’s hazel eyes, the gold in them shining bright. He looks so much more like the boy I remember.

This is too much.

I pull my head back, moving my chin away from his fingers, and walk out of the kitchen.

“Evie.”

I look down at my wrist and then back at him. “Time’s up, Caleb. Lock the door on your way out.”

As soon as I round the corner, I hurry down the hall and lock my bedroom door. I lean against it for a minute, yelling at my heart to stop racing. With all the bullshit that’s happened today, Caleb saying he’s sorry just takes the cake. The Caleb I knew would rather have let hell take over the earth before ever admitting he was wrong.

I close my eyes and can see my sister smiling at me as she whispers in my head…people change.

My eyes snap open to the sound of persistent tapping. It takes me a minute to realize that it’s coming from my bedroom door. I grumble to myself and roll out of bed as the tapping continues.

I swing the door open, catching Celeste’s hand before she taps the door again.

“It may come as a surprise to you, Cele, but I didn’t exactly get good sleep last night,” I say, rubbing what feels like sandpaper on my eyes.

Her coffee brown eyes glint with mischievous delight. “I know, asshole. Sorry, not sorry. But youhaveto see this.”

“Fine, but coffee,” I say with a whining moan that’s only for her.

She grabs my hand and literally drags me down the hall like she’s a kid at Christmas. As soon as we make it to the end, she points down to the sitting room. More specifically, to the center of the floor in our sitting room.

I follow her finger and see a massive body, curled into a ball, with a tiny throw blanket on top. Compared to the body, the blanket looks more like one of those nursery blankets that are used to cover infants.

“Did you kill him?” I ask.

She snorts, shaking her head.

“Why is he here?”

She shrugs her shoulders to my question and walks into the kitchen to start making coffee.

“I was gonna ask you the same question,” she says. Her lips twitch as she holds back her grin. “What happened last night when I went to bed?”

I sit on the bar stool and cross my arms on the counter, laying my head on top, and close my eyes.

“You’re telling me you didn’t listen from the other side of your door?”

She slams the creamer on the counter, making my head vibrate. “I’m not an asshole, asshole. I would never violate your privacy like that.”

Shifting my head to one arm, I wave my hand like it’s a white flag.

“Okay, no need for the violence. He came back to apologize. He did, and I went to bed.”

“That’s it? That’s all I get?” She pouts, and I internally roll my eyes.

She slides a steaming mug of coffee in my direction and comes to sit next to me. I sit up and we both turn around in our seats to stare at the sleeping bear on the floor, admiring what we can of the dragon tattoo that covers his shoulder.

After a few minutes of watching him breathe, she speaks. “Did you forgive him?”

I glance at her briefly before going back to stare at Caleb.

Did I?
