He sighs, and shoves his hands in his pockets. “I guess it’s not going to be that easy to get you in there, huh? I get it.”

I’m about to tell him I don’t get any of what’s happening here, but he crosses the distance between us, and takes my frozen hand in one of his.

“Let’s rewind a bit. I love you, Ivy Blue Fort. I’ve loved you since I was six years old.”

Now I know I’m dreaming. Maybe my plane crashed yesterday and I don’t remember because I’m dead.

He doesn’t remember when we first met. He just doesn’t. He’s never said a word about it.

He can’t remember.

Right?

TWENTY-NINE

A boy and a girl

The girl was very pretty, twirling in circles in her black and green tutu, and the boy didn’t quite know what to make of it.

He knew plenty of girls, but none had ever made him feel so unsure of himself.

He decided he didn’t like it.

“What are you doing here?” he grumbled.

He was about to tell her off. It was his land, his garden. But she turned around and shot him the kind of smile that didn’t exist in his world. No one ever looked that happy.

“Playing!”

So…beautiful.

He cleared his throat. “What game?”

“I’m a princess,” she announced seriously.

That made perfect sense to him because only princesses were this pretty. Besides, she wore black and green, the colors of the royal line of Anderia, and it fitted her so perfectly.

He shoved his hands in his pockets. “Well, I’m a prince,” he said simply.

She nodded, not doubting his claim either. Which was just as well, considering he spoke the truth.

“Then you can play with me!” the pretty girl announced.

Was he allowed? There were only specific boys and girls he could play with. But his parents were just there and they didn’t say anything. His mom even waved to say hello, with a big smile.

“Okay, then.”

“I ran away from the bad castle. Now the bad witch is trying to catch me!”

“I will stop her,” he offered without having to think.

Then he picked up a stick and did just that, swinging it like it was a real sword in the direction of the witch. The girl might have been smaller than him, but she ran fast, and was almost as strong.

At long last, the princess announced that they’d killed the witch. And a good thing too; he was starting to feel a little winded.

“So what now?” he asked, happy to follow.

He’d be glad to play like that every day.
