“You saved me, so you can marry me,” the princess announced.

Something in the little boy’s heart shifted. Or maybe it was his stomach. Either way, he decided he absolutely liked the sound of that. He’d been at a wedding a few weeks back, and it had been boring, but the groom had been able to kiss his bride. Could he kiss the girl?

“Okay. But I can’t marry you if I don’t know your name.”

“I’m I-vee. And what’s your name?”

“Alex,” he replied, rather than introducing himself with the long list of grandiloquent names he had to give to grownups. If she was just I-vee he could be Alex today.

“Less?” She tilted her head, her adorable little lisp butchering it. “That’s a funny name.” He was about to correct her when she broke into a mischievous grin and added, “I love it!”

The boy decided he liked it too.

There were threeother Alessandros in his family; two went by Alex, the other one, Sandro. But there was no Less.

He quite liked the thought of being unique.

“Me too.”

They got married very properly, because he found a daisy and twisted it into a ring, sliding it around her finger, and then he kissed her cheek.

Then he wanted to do it again.

But the witch had come back and they both found other sticks to fight her off.

He couldn’t remember a day when he had as much fun, but all good things eventually end.

“Sir? We need to get back,” his nanny said. “You have a lesson in fifteen minutes.”

He would have given anything to be able to skip the lesson and stay with his princess. But it wasn't worth his dad’s fury, so he reluctantly nodded.

“Hey, Less?” she called as he took the nanny’s hand. “Will you marry me again another time?”

He grinned. “I’ll marry you any time you’d like.”

“Even when we’re grown up?”

He didn’t have to think twice. “Especially when we’re grown up.”

Because then they could have a wedding with songs and cake and she’d wear a dress even prettier than the one she was in today.

“You promise?” she insisted.

“Iswear.”

She broke into an even brighter smile and ran to hug him.

There was just enough time to stop by the picnic blanket where his parents were drinking tea for a quick kiss.

“Did you have fun with that little girl?” Mother asked.

He nodded eagerly. “Oh, yes. I’m going to marry her.”

Both of his parents laughed, and his father said, “It would be useful if you did.”

He tilted his head. “Useful?”

He wanted to marry her because she was the prettiest and she smelled good and she was great at games, but he wouldn’t have thought it useful to anyone.
