Chapter43

Violetta

“You’re a fucking idiot,” Sofia yells at someone.

I immediately stop in my tracks while wiping the tears that fall from my eyes.

I’m utterly dejected after my loss to Letty.

I don’t have any energy left inside me.

“I didn’t invite her. She surprised me this morning.”

I know it’s him just by the sound of his voice.

“You knew how important this game was to her and not only did you abandon her this morning, but you brought your girlfriend with you. When you know how she feels.” Sofia scoffs.

“I don’t know how she feels.” Xavier lets out a frustrated groan.

“Are you oblivious?” Sofia is frustrated.

“No, I know there’s tension. But I don’t think she necessarily likes me.”

“How are both of you so stupid?” I hear Sofia pacing.

“Don’t call her stupid.” His tone becomes annoyed.

“You’re the one to talk.”

I can practically hear her eyes roll from here.

“What is that supposed to mean?” Xavier is getting riled up. I’ve never heard his voice so tense; he is usually a happy-go-lucky person. But it seems as if he’s annoyed.

“It means that both of you have repressed feelings. You know and I know, maybe she doesn’t know that she likes you. But even so, your mere lack of presence, which led to your girlfriend’s presence led to her losing.”

“Don’t blame me for something that isn’t my fault.” He’s getting defensive.

“You may not think that, but you know the effect you have on her.”

“I’m done having this conversation,” Xavier tells her. I hear him starting to walk in my direction. I panic, not knowing where to go. I don’t need either of them to know that I’ve been eavesdropping on their conversation this whole time.

So I walk backward far enough that I wouldn’t have been able to listen. It doesn’t really help me in this position anyway. When Xavier walks out, he will see me.

I don’t want to talk to him.

Like Sofia said, I don’t even understand my own feelings. How can I process his?

That is if he does have any feelings.

My feet carry me so I’m a few feet from Xavier as he walks out. His head turns to me immediately. I see his hands balled up into fists and his jaw clenched.

He’s not annoyed, more like angry.

But once my eyes meet his, it’s as if all that anger dissipates from his body.

“Vio.” Xavier stops in his tracks, with remorse in his eyes.

“Hi,” I tell him, smiling as I try to make my façade believable.
