“Best friend,” I correct her with a smile.

“I wouldn’t say that just yet. You know Ale exists, right?” she replies.

“How could you pick Ale over me?” I scoff playfully.

“Sunshine, we’ve been best friends since we were sixteen. What did you expect?”

“For you to acknowledge the fact that I’m better than Ale.” I cross my arms, my smile getting bigger as this conversation keeps going.

“Not going to happen.”

“The deceit!” I’m dramatic. I know it and I own it.

Marrisa and Vio start laughing at my antics.

“Anyway,” Sofia interrupts the laughter ensuing. “Vio, you have a press conference in five minutes,” she says in a rush, knowing Vio needs to leave.

“Oh, okay.” She pauses then looks over at us. “It was nice meeting you, Marrisa.”

“You too. I’ll most likely see you soon.”

“Yea, sounds good,” Vio replies then turns toward me. “I’ll see you soon.” Hope is laced in her tone. We both know I’ll most likely travel the world, finding time in my schedule to spend just five minutes with her.

“You know it.” I give her a blinding grin and her face softens with relief in response.

“Good.” Then she hugs me. I hug her back.

“Text me later?” I whisper the question in her ear.

“Yep.”

“Good.”

We pull apart as Sofia grabs her arm. “Bye, Xavier.” Sofia waves me off and Vio looks at me one last time before walking away toward her press conference.

“Ready?” Marrisa says behind me.

“Yea,” I reply.

“Any surprises I should know about?” Marrisa asks me with excitement in her tone.

“It wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you.”

“True,” she points out while we walk away from the arena and Vio.

I might have a surprise for Marrisa but one I don’t think about as much as I thought about Vio’s.

I have a surprise in store for her too, one I won’t be able to give her but have put more thought in it than Marrisa’s.

Because my plans with Marrisa are set in stone.

But even so, I leave my twenty sunflowers, ten more than before, on the receptionist’s desk an hour before I check out the next day. Telling the concierge exactly what room to deliver them to, having asked Vio what room she’s staying in, with a brief Happy Valentine’s Day text.

The little red Cartier box is shoved inside the vines of the flowers with a necklace I custom-made for her. A square pendulum sits inside with the image of a blue sunset towering over the coastline with diamonds framing it in a thin square.

My favorite color mixed with hers.

But that’s not all. I also had a tennis racket custom-made for her.
