Walking around the island, I sit on a stool right next to him, accepting the moment in front of us.

“If you had told me that, I could have just given you the car as a present for your birthday.”

“What?” I let out in disbelief. “That car is your baby.”

“Yes, it is. But it’s just a car. Seeing an excited expression on your face would have been enough.”

“So I don’t even have to beat you to get the car?”

“Wait,” he tells me with a chuckle at my anticipation. “You didn’t tell me about how much you love my car, which means the rules still apply.”

I groan and he laughs.

“That doesn’t mean that I won’t give it to you as a present one day.” He wiggles his eyebrows in my direction.

All my anxiety dissipates once he says those words.

It’s as if he’s saying nothing has to be rushed in order for you to get what you want. His words stay with me and that’s when I know I have to tell him.

I’ve been waiting a bit to express how I feel. It’s felt like an eternity, but if I tell him now, it doesn’t mean we have to be together at this moment.

The best things are for those who wait.

“Xavier, I need to tell you something,” I tell him in almost a whisper.

His attention is fully on me.

“You can tell me anything, Blondie.” He smiles.

“Before I say anything, I want you to promise me that this doesn’t affect our friendship.”

The expression on his face is curious. “Nothing you could ever say would ruin this.” His finger gestures between us.

I nod.

In these moments, I realize that even if he has a girlfriend, I have to tell him how I feel. Because everyone’s emotions are valid, even mine. I don’t deserve to be in this recurring cycle, and I refuse to be in it any longer.

He doesn’t deserve to be in a friendship with someone who doesn’t tell him the whole truth.

Sometimes we have to have conversations in order for everyone to be comfortable in the relationship we have with the people in our lives.

“Xavier, I like you,” I tell him, breaking the silence. “You might not feel the same way, which is completely fine, considering if you didn’t, it wouldn’t be the first time this has happened to me. But all the moments we’ve shared encourage me to say these words to you. Because I know eventually, we need to talk about this. I won’t wait another two years. I can’t.” I shake my head at the image of young Vio flashing through my head.

He looks at me with no shock present on his face as if he was expecting my words.

He’s about to speak before I cut him off.

“Wait.” I hold my hand up to stop him. “I want you to know I’m not asking you to break up with your girlfriend. I could never do that. All I’m doing is simply telling you. You don’t have to respond or tell me anything in return. I’m doing this for me.” My words are simple, but my emotions are so complex.

“Vio, I like you too,” he tells me simply.

The words make me want to cry. This is the first time anyone has liked me back. The feeling is not one I’ve experienced before.

Relief is far from describing it.

“You do?” I pause. “Xavier, you don’t have to just tell me that because you know someone has turned me do—”

“Vio stop.” His tone is firm. “Don’t insult me.”
