“I’m not insulting you; I just want you to know that it’s not a requirement to tell me the same thing back. If you don’t, it’s fi—”

“It’s not fine, Vio. The thought of that bastard turning down one of the only things I’ve ever wanted makes me want to rip him to shreds.”

I stay quiet as the words “the only thing I’ve ever wanted” process in my brain.

“Quite frankly, it drives me mad that I couldn’t tell you my feelings. Him turning you down shouldn’t have ever happened. It can’t compute in my brain that a man can’t see how fucking perplexing you are.” He pauses, running his hands through his hair. “No, the most infuriating thing is that you can’t see that. You having to confirm my feelings for you, so it wouldn’t be a pity reply, makes my heart fucking break.”

“I just don’t want you to feel bad. You have a girlfriend and sometimes I thought I was imagining the connection we have,” I tell him honestly.

“The fact that you don’t realize how lovable you are breaks my soul. You thinking our connection is a figment of your imagination hurts. Girlfriend or not, Vio, I like you too fucking much. It makes me go crazy half of the time knowing I can’t have you no matter how badly I try to fight obligation.”

“What do you mean?”

“Vio, I have been fighting with myself to break up with Marrisa. Ever since I met you, I’ve been questioning it. But I can’t because she’s one of the team’s investors’ daughters.”

So, his mother was right. I’m genuinely so dumb.

“You have?” My eyes begin to water slightly.

“Yes, I have. But I can’t do that to the team no matter how much I want this to happen.”

“Our circumstances don’t allow it,” I whisper, finishing his thought.

At this point, he’s pacing around the kitchen. I stand up from the chair, watching him.

“This can’t happen, can it?” I ask.

He looks me in the eye as if his pain is rooted in my question. Xavier walks toward me and grasps my face in his hands, staring me straight in the eyes.

We stand there a few minutes until he steps back as if he’s been burned.

He’s looking away from me. “Xavier,” I tell him, trying to get him out of his own mind and focus on me, us.

His jaw is clenching from the side until he makes a sudden movement.

“Fuck everyone. Fuck our circumstances. Fuck everything.”

His lips crash on mine in seconds.

The first thing I notice is that his lips are soft.

He groans into the kiss, with both his hands cupping my face.

It’s a kiss filled with an overwhelming amount of passion, as if we are trying to convey all the unspoken words and tension we’ve had through this single act.

In this stolen moment, time loses its meaning.

The weight of our inevitable attraction momentarily lifts, replaced by a sense of completeness that only comes when two souls meet with such emotion.

This kiss is ours and only ours.

No one will know about this, only us.

That sends a thrill inside my spine and his lips fight with mine for dominance.

He’s a good kisser, a really good kisser.

But as quickly as it began, the kiss ends, leaving an imprint on my lips.
