“Depends.”

“Will he be needing something from you soon?”

To this, the guy went cold. “No. And even if he did, I’d never lead you to him, man. I ain’t walking into that.”

I measured the resolve in his eyes. This A-hole wouldn’t budge on this point, and damn it if that didn’t create a complication.

I pulled the knife from its sheath and glared at him.

“Franco’s been obsessed with intel he thinks Dominic had. He won’t let it go. Why?”

“Threatens his freedom.”

“There’s more to it than that.” That much was obvious with his relentless and incessant pursuit.

No response.

“He thinks Dominic gave this intel to someone, but if he did, the only way Franco would assume he hasn’t been arrested is if law enforcement was sitting on it. Why would Franco think law enforcement would do that?” My tone wasn’t a question; it was a demand.

No response.

I punched him in the head to remind him who was in charge of this conversation.

Have to say, the moan he tried to stifle gave me crazy good satisfaction.

“Allow me to remind you, you don’t have to worry about Franco killing you, Lonnie. You’re not walking out of here alive. So, you can either tell me the information that I want to know, or I will make your death so brutal and painful, you’ll wish you were never born.”

It had been my experience that some of the most violent criminals in this country were also the biggest cowards. How easy it was for them to dish out death, but when death was pointed at them? They’d nearly piss themselves.

Being tortured? To hell with that.

But who knew? Maybe Lonnie was stronger than all of the other killers I had come across. Maybe he would be loyal to Franco, even though Franco would never do the same for Lonnie.

The question was: how far did Lonnie’s loyalty stretch? Was he really willing to be tortured to death?

“Okay, okay, fine…” Lonnie said in surrender. “I’ll tell you whatever it is you want to know.”

I refrained from grinning.

“I want to know what information he thinks Dominic leaked and why Franco’s gone to these lengths to stop it from coming out.”

Lonnie licked his lips, hesitating, a clear battle of indecision playing across his face as he looked down, remaining silent for several seconds before clearing his throat.

“Franco has been building a drug empire in Europe for the past few years. But the goal was always to bring it to the United States.”

“Talk faster.” I had to dispose of his body, and the clock was ticking.

The guy glared at me before continuing.

“Franco’s expecting the arrival of his first big shipment here in the States.”

“When?”

“I don’t know. Soon. Point is, everything he’s worked for over the last several years is about to come to a head.”

“And this is the information he thinks Dominic had on him.”

“Franco wanted a family member to help him run the organization here. And even though Dominic wasn’t as strong as Franco, Franco seemed to think he could whip Dominic into shape. So, he brought Dominic into the fold and told him everything.”
