Her eyes widened, mouth slightly agape, as she appeared to process what she’d just heard.

While the sirens were good news for her, for me, it meant I needed to hurry.

I spotted her cell phone lying on the ground, and grateful it hadn’t broken when the guy had tossed it down, I handed it to her. She took her cell hesitantly, in shock, I guess.

“I need you to run, Luna. Go through that door.” That exit led to the front parking lot, where the police cars would most likely park.

She looked hesitant, looking between me and Franco.

“I’ll hold him for the police,” I lied with a smile. “But you need to run. If I lose control of him, he could come after you.”

Her eyes widened.

“Run, Luna.”

She appeared to contemplate her decision, but after suffering the trauma of being kidnapped and tortured, Luna—holding her bleeding arm against her body—shuffled out the door, just like I told her.

Leaving me smiling.

Luna was safe.

And as a bonus, I had Franco Hopkins in my possession.

I felt like a kid on a twisted Christmas morning.

But the sirens were too close. A mile or two away, best guess.

Which was a huge problem.

Franco Hopkins didn’t deserve to die a quick death. After what he did to Luna, there was no way he would get off with a bullet to the brain or a slash to his jugular.

Luna’s injuries would require transport to the hospital—an overnight stay, most likely. A few hours, minimum.

Giving me time to make this motherfucker pay. And I was going to enjoy every second of it.

I needed to get him out of here—now. Not ideal. But when it came to vengeance against the man who tried to kill the woman I loved? I was willing to make an exception.

I hoisted the guy up over my shoulder, walking toward the back of the warehouse. Where my car was waiting.

CHAPTER62

Luna

“You didn’t find them?” I asked, my heart plummeting to my feet.

The scene before me was nothing short of chaotic. Police cars, their lights blazing, were strewn haphazardly around the perimeter while morgue vehicles parked ominously nearby—their presence a grim reminder of the day’s events.

Events that had left me in shock, I think. My mind raced to recount what had happened inside that cold, unassuming building while EMTs finished bandaging my arm up with butterfly tape and gauze and prepared to take me to the hospital.

“Not yet,” Detective Rinaldi replied in a comforting tone. She was wearing her hair in a bun, but a few strands had escaped, like this case was getting to her, too. “We found the bodies of the other men.”

“Franco and the Vigilante…they’re both missing?” My unease grew into an all-out alarm.

Rinaldi’s eyes softened, a sadness creeping into their depths, like she worried each revelation had the power to make me break in half. Because it very much did.

“We should head to the hospital now,” an EMT said.

“We have officers conducting a second search.” Rinaldi held up a finger to the EMT, silently asking him to give us a minute. He stepped out of the ambulance and made his way to the front. “It’s a big warehouse, Luna, with lots of places to hide.”
