I hopped out of the car, wincing when my arm swung the door shut, and ran to the front door, grateful I still had my keys. Hunter had given me a set when I essentially moved in here.

I glanced up at the security monitor, wondering if his team was on the other end of that lens, watching me right now. Or was Hunter calling them, screaming he was in danger somewhere else?

Because the scary reality was, if Franco went after Hunter, he would probably take him someplace remote, just like he had taken me to that warehouse. The prospect had haunted me the entire drive here, and I wished I knew where Franco might take Hunter, where else to look.

But desperate and terrified, I proceeded with my original plan to check his house first. After that, I would go to the cottage, and after that, I would head to his office and look for him there myself, because maybe Franco had taken him to a different room in that building. After that, I wasn’t sure where I’d look.

Hopefully, he’d turn up before then.

With my body screaming in pain, from both the car accident and all the blows I had sustained from Franco and his men, I walked through the front door and quickly punched in the security code, like Hunter had told me to do when I first stayed here.

I didn’t want his security team to rush over here unless we needed them; Hunter might be out there in danger somewhere, so his team needed to be armed and ready to rush to his aid. If the danger was here, I’d activate the alarm with one button.

As soon as I stepped into the great room, my heart sank. I don’t know what I expected to find, but there was no trace of Hunter.

No trace of his staff, though, either. Which was weird. I mean yeah, Hunter sometimes sent his staff home, particularly when he and I were having a romantic night, but why weren’t they here now?

No sound of footsteps or any indication of life inside these walls.

“Hello?” I called out. “Hunter?”

No response.

My cell phone buzzed with a call.

“Hello?”

“You shouldn’t have left the scene.” It was Detective Rinaldi’s irritated voice.

“No one understands how much danger Hunter might be in.”

“Where are you?”

“I just got to his house.”

“Luna, we need to finish your statement and take you to a hospital. You could have a concussion, and if something happens to you? All due respect, you’re basically the mayor’s pet right now, so if anything goes sideways because you left, it could blow back on me.”

“All due respect, I don’t care about careers right now. I’m not going to the hospital until we find Hunter, so instead of arguing with me about it, help me find him.”

She sighed. I doubted she would normally put this much effort into any person who fled a scene, but I was part of the law enforcement community. And we try to protect our own.

Speaking of which.

“You told me a cop was sent to check on Hunter, so why is there no cop here?”

“I…I don’t know. Maybe the officer dispatched hasn’t arrived yet.”

“I took an Uberwithoutblue and red lights and beat a cop here?”I don’t think so.

“I don’t know. I’ll find out what’s going on. Meanwhile, donotgo inside.”

“Too late.”

She let out a seriously irritated breath. I bet more frazzled pieces of her bun were evacuating the pins on her head.

“I’m sending another car now,” she said. “Leave the house.”

“How long will that take?”
