As he walked out of the house, I shoved a hand through my hair.

“Is that why you’re here?” I turned to my brother. “To team up against me over something that hasn’t even happened yet?”

Yet?

Grayson walked over to the windows. “No. Like I said, I heard about the bloodbath on the news and thought I’d pop in to see how you were doing. When I arrived, Uncle Alexander was already here.”

I glanced in the direction of my office, then looked at my watch. Before walking over to my brother.

“You vanished for four weeks this time,” I said. “Not a word.”

Like a walking cliché to my statement, Grayson said nothing.

“All three of us texted you,” I challenged. “Alexander did, too.”

I wonder if Alexander gave Grayson a piece of his mind before I came in here.

Grayson raised a brow. “You guys are comparing notes now?”

“When you have a brother that mysteriously and repeatedly vanishes for long periods of time, without so much as a word? Yeah. You check in with each other to make sure you’re not dead or something.”

Grayson looked out the window, at the little cottage of complications.

“Uncle Alexander will come to his senses if you like her,” he mused.

“You know every time you vanish like this, I wonder if it’s going to be the last time I ever see you.”

“Are you dating her?” My brother motioned toward Luna’s place.

“You want to vanish, whatever. But what’s with the no texting?”

“’Cause I haven’t seen Alexander get that worked up in a bit.”

“It takes two seconds to fire off,Hey, brothers. FYI, I’m not dead. Is that too much to ask?”

After a long sigh, Grayson looked down at his drink.

I flicked my fingers at my side and glanced at my watch again.

“At least tell me this,” I said. “Is it justourfamily? Or do you disappear from everyone?”

Grayson took a slow sip of his scotch, swirling it around in his mouth before clearing his throat.

“It’s not our family,” was all he said. And I could tell by his eye avoidance, that was all I was going to get from him. Again.

The first time he disappeared like this, he’d made it pretty damn clear that he had no intention of sharing where he was going or why, so I had accepted his boundaries. Because what choice did I have?

What I didn’t accept was leaving us hanging to wonder if he had simply vanished or if he died or something.

I pinched the bridge of my nose while Grayson nodded his chin toward the little cottage of complications.

“When he saw you with her, he must’ve seen something that got him all worked up. What was it?”

Part of me wanted to keep going after him. I’d always tried to respect his privacy and not press him too hard on his secrets, but it was theno communicationpart that got under my skin. But for now, I let it go, and answered his question.

“I don’t know.”

Grayson side-eyed me.
