“Good afternoon to you, too, Hunter. Having a nice day?”

“Take them down.”

“You know, I saw you storming over here. Huffing and puffing like you were going to come blow my house down,” she said slowly, an evil glint in her eye, repeating my words from earlier. Then she took a sip of her water, a smile dancing dangerously on the edge of her lips.

“Take. Them. Down.”

“I’m sorry,” she said in a much-too-pleasant tone. “If you read my rental agreement, it states that whileyoumay have the power to install security cameras, the space infrontof the security cameras doesn’t belong to you. It’s occupied by your tenant.”

Unbelievable. I wasn’t sure if she was right. I was a criminal prosecutor, not a real estate lawyer. Why did my business manager rent out these godforsaken cottages, anyway? Who cared if they were abandoned? We could’ve hired people to take care of them. I’d rip him a new asshole for putting me in this position, and so help me, I’d have my real estate lawyer look at that contract with a fine-tooth comb.

But in the meantime…

I jumped up and yanked the troll down.

Threw it to the ground.

“Hey!”

Made my way to the next camera.

“Stop!”

Did the same thing.

“Hunter, I swear to God, I’ll put them back up.”

Closing the gap between us, I captured her gaze, ensuring she couldn’t avoid the intensity burning in my eyes.

“You want to get yourself killed? That’s up to you. But I’m not going to stand by and allow it to happen.”

“Allow. There’s that word again. Here’s a news flash, Hunter: you don’t own the world and all the people in it. We have the right to live life as we choose.”

“You have no right to be this reckless.”

“You have no right to spy on me with your cameras.”

As I edged closer, the sweet aroma of strawberries from her breath teased my senses.

“These cameras are here to keep you safe.”

She jabbed a finger at me, her voice filled with defiance. “You’re used to controlling everyone and everything, and you can’t handle the fact that I’m not going along with it. Maybe that’s what you’re really pissed about.”

“Is that really what you think?”

The groan of an engine cut through the tense silence between us.

“Why do you care, anyway?” she barked. “Don’t you have better things to do with your time than obsess over atenant?”

Her emphasis on the wordtenanttwisted a sharp blade in my gut. Rage bubbled up inside me, my knuckles whitening. WhydidI care this much? And why couldn’t I stop thinking about her covered in strawberries and whipped cream while I licked it off her body?

“You want a reason? How about this? I own this cottage and have a vested interest in not having a homicide take place on my land.”

She faltered, her chest deflating. Even as she attempted to hold her chin high, a tiny tremor betrayed her lips.

Damn, I was an A-hole. I shouldn’t have snapped like that. Should have told her the reason I wanted to keep her safe was because it washer. Did she honestly think I’d be so callous as to look at her as nothing more than a tenant after what we’d shared?

“You’re such a dick,” she said.
