She’d been thrilled, finishing up her duties at the school quickly so they could leave for the airport the same day. So far, they’d spent most of the first two days in bed, wrapped up in each other, and ordering pizza so they didn’t have to cook.

“What’s wrong?” Aero asked, setting aside his book on the coffee table. He’d been stretched out on the small, striped sofa, his feet bare, surprisingly relaxed in the afternoon sun.

Sam looked worried, but he didn’t understand why. They had gone to the beach, had lunch, and gone shopping for souvenirs. They’d decided to have a lazy afternoon before going to a drive-in theater to see a movie once the sun went down. She’d been bubbling with excitement, not even bothered by her sunburnt shoulders. She’d been so happy and relaxed the whole time that it frightened him to see her suddenly so upset.

He sat up, dropping his feet to the floor, and reached for her.

“Aero,” she said again, tears welling in her eyes.

“Sammy?” His brows drew together as panic seized his chest. “Are you okay?”

She nodded, sitting beside him on the couch and tucking herself against his side.

“Tell me what’s going on,” Aero beseeched, cupping her face in his hands. Her hazel eyes were watery and red, like she’d been crying, as more tears welled up.

She let out a slow breath, took his hand, and upturned his palm. He watched raptly as she placed something in his hand and waited, looking tense.

Aero looked down at the white plastic in his palm, not understanding it for a moment, until the little pink plus sign registered. He gulped.

“I’m pregnant,” Sam said softly, gazing at him with wide eyes.

Aero paused, looked from her to the test, and back at her. “You’re pregnant.”

“I’m pregnant!” she shrieked, throwing herself into his arms and squeezing him tight.

“Oh, my God!” Aero shouted, hopping to his feet and crushing her to his chest. “Are you sure?”

Sam nodded frantically. “I took four other tests.”

Aero laughed out loud, the sound deep but joyful, his happiness filling the space as he lifted her and spun her around in circles. Setting her down, he meshed his lips with hers, kissing her deeply.

“Thank you,” he said, clutching her close to his body.

“I think I should be thanking you.” She laughed, holding his face and kissing him fiercely.

“But if the test is positive now…” Aero paused, doing the math.

“I missed my last period. If I had to guess, I’d say I’m eight or nine weeks along.”

“Aren’t you getting sick?” Aero asked, looking her over with concern.

Sam bit her bottom lip. “I was sort of… hiding it.”

“Why?” Aero asked, confused.

“I didn’t wanna worry you, or get your hopes up, or…” she trailed off, looking down at the floor.

“Sammy, I’m ready for this,” he insisted, tilting her chin up. “We talked about it.”

After they’d been married for about a year and settled into life as husband and wife, Aero had been the one to start dropping hints about trying for a baby, much to Sam’s surprise. They had started renting a two-bedroom apartment about a mile from the compound in the more historic part of town, about six months after they returned from Kansas. Their building held two apartments and boasted a large, fenced-in yard, which Sam had tried to convince Aero would be perfect for a puppy. That wasn’t exactly on the table anymore, but it would also be perfect for a swing set.

Overall, Sam wasn’t in a hurry, enjoyed being alone with Aero in their apartment, and figured in time they would start a family.

One afternoon, Aero had brought Sam to his session with Dr. Byrd. It was the first time she’d met the man, and she found him to be kind but firm, and she could easily see why Aero respected him. They’d sat down and talked for over an hour about Aero’s desire to have a child, about both of their reservations and fears, and came to the conclusion, with Dr. Byrd’s help, that they were ready.

Sam had stopped taking her birth control, but nothing happened right away. Aero had been disappointed for the first few months, but they figured it would happen when it was supposed to.

Now, standing in the living room of their rented beach house, Sam gazed up at her husband and smiled. “I know. We’re ready.”
