Aero, feeling a bit more settled having seen her text, smiled at the screen before tapping out a reply.

“Glad to hear it. Goodnight.” On a whim, he added an x to the end of his message too and hit send. He stared at the ceiling, wondering what she would think of the “kiss.”

He tried to imagine kissing Sam, what it would feel like to hold her close, to press his lips against hers, and the sound she would make if he tugged on her full bottom lip with his teeth.

Aero swallowed hard, trying to ignore the rushing of blood in his ears.

He hadn’t kissed a woman in years. He wasn’t sure he remembered how.

Tossing an arm over his eyes, Aero fought to keep the memories at bay. He would have a hard enough time sleeping, consumed as he was by thoughts of Sam, and didn’t need any more anguish keeping him awake.

Chapter 4

“Enjoy your lunches,” Sam said, holding the door open for her students as they exited her classroom and headed toward the gym, which also served as the cafeteria.

“Sam,” Aero’s deep voice came from behind her, and she shivered.

“Hello, Aero,” she said, turning to face him, smiling warmly.

“I’m here for lunch,” he murmured, reaching out and taking her hand in his.

“Are you now?” She cocked a brow, and he nodded.

“Come with me.” Sam guided him into the classroom and shutting the door.

He sat on the table beside her desk, and she handed him a container of pasta salad.

“Thank you,” he said, opening it and taking a bite. Her lunches were always simple but delicious, and he had begun wondering each morning what she would bring that day.

“You’re welcome.” Sam uncapped a bottle of water and handed it to him.

They ate in silence for several moments before Sam spoke up.

“I’d like to go out with you again,” she said, the words tumbling out quickly.

Aero met her eyes. “Okay.”

She held her breath. That wasn’t exactly an invitation. It wasn’t a rejection, either.

“Would you like to have dinner again?” Sam offered, trying to steer the conversation in her favor.

“I would,” Aero swallowed hard, his mind spinning. He wanted to do better than a quick, casual meal this time. “Are you free on Saturday?”

Sam nodded. “Do you want to pick me up?”

“Yes. Six o’clock?”

Sam agreed, wrote down her address on a sticky note, and handed it over.

Aero smiled at her, tucking the paper into his pocket. “I should get back to work.”

“Oh, okay,” Sam said, feeling a bit disappointed.

“Thank you for the lunch.” Aero leaned over, placing the empty container in her tote bag. He paused, glancing down at her hair. She smelled of lavender; the light herbal scent relaxed him slightly. Boldly, he leaned down and kissed the top of her head before retreating.

Sam froze, then breathed, “Anytime.”

“Have a good day,” he told her, promptly turning and leaving the room.
