“A few different things. At first, I was infantry, but for my second contract, I was an aircraft electrician.”

“Why’d you change jobs?” That was quite a change to go from being shot at to fixing planes.

Aero took a deep breath, stared into Sam’s eyes, and said, “I got married.”

A chill ran down Aero’s spine as he waited for her reaction, her rejection, or her questions, but Sam just held his hand and waited for him to continue.

“I met someone between deployments. She worked at a barbershop just outside the base. She cut my hair a few times, we hit it off, and we started dating.” Aero started babbling. He hadn’t told anyone about Sarah in so long that he almost felt like he was making the story up, but he continued. “When I was deployed the second time, there was, um…” He flinched, shook his head, and continued. “When I got home, I asked her to marry me; she said yes, and I changed jobs later that year when I reenlisted so I could stay stateside.”

Sam was watching him raptly, hanging on his every word. She was in awe of him, what he’d been through, and that he was being so open with her.

“Her name was Sarah,” he whispered, looking down at his boots.

Sam already knew that, of course, but she didn’t tell Aero that. “That’s a pretty name.”

“She was pretty.” Sarah’s blonde hair and sparkling eyes popping into his head.

“Do you wanna tell me what happened to her?” Sam asked softly, wanting him to know he could stop whenever he wanted.

Aero shook his head once, still clasping her hand tightly.

“That’s okay. Thank you for sharing all of that with me.” Sam gave him a gentle smile and leaned forward, kissing his cheek.

The corner of his mouth ticked up and he turned to look at her.

“Tell me something about you,” Aero said, wondering idly why it had been so easy to tell Sam the details of his life.

“What do you wanna know?”

“Anything,” he said, his voice rough. “Everything.”

“Um,” Sam thought for a moment. “I wear contacts.”

“Really?” Aero’s brows drew together, trying to picture Sam in glasses.

Sam nodded. “I have glasses but I hate wearing them.”

“Show me,” Aero requested, not realizing he’d said it until the words were out.

Sam giggled. “Hang on.”

Standing from the couch, she released his hand and disappeared into the bathroom. She emerged a few minutes later wearing a pair of black-framed cat-eyed glasses. Aero gulped.

“Wow,” he breathed, making her blush.

Sam sat beside him again, immediately taking his hand in hers. “You like them?”

Aero nodded. “You look beautiful.”

What he didn’t tell her was that the glasses really drove the teacher fantasy home. He shifted uncomfortably, his jeans suddenly feeling tight.

“Thanks.” Sam smiled.

“Tell me something else,” Aero insisted, leaning toward her. He was now desperate to know everything about this woman, no matter how small the details were.

“Hmm.” Sam considered what to tell him. “I love ice cream. Any flavor, any time, I just love it.”

Aero chuckled at that, and she grinned.
