“Ben and Jerry’s is my favorite. Phish Food, especially.”

“Noted.” Aero watched her, his discomfort leaving him rapidly and a foreign sense of eagerness taking its place. “Tell me more.”

“I’ve never been to the East Coast, but I’ve always wanted to go to the beach, especially in Maine,” Sam said, having caught sight of a wooden lighthouse decoration on the shelf across the room.

“I’ll take you,” Aero said automatically.

Sam cocked a brow. “Wanna go now?”

Aero laughed out loud, taking both of her hands in his. “I would, but your students would miss you.”

Sam sighed happily. He had a nice laugh, deep and gravelly. It suited him, and she wanted to hear him laugh like that more often. “Yeah, they would.”

“I like listening to you teach,” Aero admitted shyly.

Sam felt her cheeks heat. “You’ve been watching me teach?”

“I can’t help it. I spent a lot of time in that hallway. Your students love you.”

“I know. I love them, too,” Sam said, picturing their little faces making her chest feel warm.

“I can tell,” Aero said, taking another deep breath. “Do you want kids? Of your own, I mean.”

Sam shrugged. “Someday, sure.”

“Is that…” He looked down at their hands. “Is that something you dream of? Having a family?”

Sam was taken aback by the question, especially considering how he had reacted to talking about his own family.

“I’ve always wondered what it’d be like to have a husband, a few children, and a nice house. I liked living here with Gemma, but now that I see her with Zed and Levi…” Sam swallowed hard, only then realizing she was a bit envious of her friend. “I think it’d be nice to have that.”

“You’d be an amazing mother,” Aero said softly, rubbing her knuckles with his thumbs.

“You think so?”

“Yes. You’re patient and kind. You take care of people; you’re compassionate and loving,” Aero praised her.

“I suppose that’s true,” Sam agreed. “I’d like to have someone to come home to at night. Someone to sleep next to, a person to grow old with, to raise a family with. I’ve always figured I’d have plenty of time to get there.”

Aero’s heart began to beat frantically in his chest. He wanted to be her person, he realized. It was soon—much too soon—but at that moment, he wanted to give her everything and more. He released her hands and cradled her face gently in his hands.

“You deserve to be happy,” he said softly, gazing into her eyes.

“So do you, Aero,” Sam said with conviction.

“I’m getting there,” he admitted, leaning forward and brushing his lips over hers.

Sam melted against him, kissing him softly.

Aero gently shifted Sam back so she was lying on the sofa cushion, and he followed her, settling between her legs.

“Is this okay?” he asked, nuzzling her neck.

“Yes,” Sam breathed, grasping his biceps as her head spun. He was solid above her, his weight pressing her into the sofa. He braced most of his weight on his forearms so he didn’t crush her, but his heat seared her where they touched. “Are you okay?”

He nodded before slowly, so slowly, kissing down her neck, across her collarbone, and to the cleft of her breasts.

Sam tried not to writhe beneath him, but he was lighting her on fire, desire flowing through her veins with singing heat.
