Aero sighed. “I’m not sure. If you’re this upset, maybe the right thing to do is to tell her.”

“But it’s none of my business. Had I not seen what they were doing in that closet, I would just carry on being ignorant and not having to think about how Kelly’s life is hanging in the balance. I also wouldn’t have to have the image of Mike’s pale, hairy ass burned into my corneas.”

That made Aero burst out laughing. Sam couldn’t contain her giggles either, and they were both shaking with laughter.

When the hysteria passed, Aero suggested they go see what Ma had made for dinner and led Sam down to the bar to retrieve her drink and relax among her friends.

Chapter 13

Sam waited in the entryway of her apartment, bouncing excitedly and nervously as she checked her makeup and hair in the hall mirror. It was her first Valentine’s Day date, and she wasn’t sure what to expect.

Aero knocked, and when she opened the door, his breath left him. She looked stunning. More so than usual.

“Wow,” he breathed, roving his eyes over her. The long-sleeved black dress clung to her modest curves, the red of her heels matching her purse and her lips, a swath of skin between her breasts showing from a v-shaped sheer panel on the front of the dress.

“Hi.” Sam smiled, gazing up at him.

“You look beautiful,” Aero said, reaching out to touch her hair and twisting a loose curl around his finger, feeling the silky strands. They were pulled back on top and waved elegantly around her shoulders.

“Thanks.” Sam blushed, grabbing her coat off the hook. Aero took it from her and held it out, letting her slip her arms through. Once she had buttoned it, he took her hand in his, walking her to the truck and opening the door for her.

He joined her in the cab, taking her hand in his and kissing her knuckles lightly. “Ready?”

Sam nodded, taking in his emerald-green eyes, which were bright and clear.

He drove, one hand resting on her knee, and Sam perused him.

His black jeans clung to his strong thighs, his white button-down shirt tucked in, and his leather boots were buffed and shiny. It was the most dressed-up she had ever seen him, and she was glad she had picked a fancier outfit, too.

Aero parked on the side of the street, cut the engine, and rounded to her side.

Upon opening the door, he held out a hand and helped her down.

They walked down the icy street hand in hand until they reached a restaurant on the corner.

Aero pulled open the door, let Sam enter, and followed along into the dimly lit space. It was romantic and serene, with light orchestral music filling the space along with the sounds of talking, glasses clinking, and silverware on plates.

“Good evening.” The hostess smiled at them.

“Reservation for two. It’s under McBride,” Aero said, and Sam stared up at him. He’d made a reservation? How fancy was this place? And he’d used his real name. Clearly, Aero meant business.

“Yes, right this way.” The hostess picked up two menus and guided them through the white-clothed tables to a small table in the corner.

Aero pulled out Sam’s chair for her, then sat across from her, looking equal parts nervous and excited. Sam looked around, taking in the soft, intimate atmosphere, and smiled.

“This place is incredible,” she said, taking Aero’s hand in hers.

“I’m glad you like it,” he smiled, watching the way the candle flame danced over her features.

When they had their drinks and were waiting for their meals, Aero cleared his throat.

“I have something for you,” he said, rubbing her knuckles with his thumb.

“I thought we had agreed on no gifts.”

“I know. That was because I didn’t want you to buy me something,” Aero admitted. “The rule doesn’t apply to me. So here.” He leaned over, removing a white envelope from his back pocket, and handed it over.

Sam laughed at his show of spirit. “What is it?”
