They found a vacant bench and sat down facing the water, the sun setting before them.

Sam sighed contentedly. “I wanna live here.”

“Where? Maine, or this bench specifically?” Aero joked, and she elbowed him gently.

It was such a pleasure, and a relief, for him to joke with her. It was like a new Aero had emerged from the wreckage, and he was making up for lost time, teasing Sam, and enjoying life.

“I’d love to have a place here. I’d teach during the school year, then come here for the summers,” Sam said.

“That sounds like a good idea,” Aero murmured, eating his ice cream while contemplating the cost of beach-side real estate.

“Would you be happy here?”

Aero’s chest constricted at the question. “I’d be happy wherever you are.”

His voice was gruff as he leaned over and kissed her cheek sweetly.

Tears sprung into her eyes as she watched him, the warm orange glow of the sunset shining on his beautiful face. “I’m happy with you, too, Aero.”

They stared at each other for a moment, something unspoken passing between them, until a seagull screeched loudly from the stone wall separating the road from the beach, making them jump.

Aero cleared his throat and held out his cone. “Wanna trade?”

Sam laughed. “No, this is mine.” She pulled her ice cream away from him.

“Don’t they teach sharing in kindergarten anymore?” Aero faked a scowl, and Sam cackled.

“Just a taste,” she relented, holding out her cone toward him.

Aero kept his eyes on hers, leaned forward, and tasted her ice cream. Sam bit her lip as she watched, everything south of her belly button tightening at the sight.

“Your turn,” Aero murmured, watching raptly as Sam leaned in and ran the tip of her tongue over his ice cream. He suppressed a groan, swallowing hard as she hummed in pleasure.

She sat back slightly and gazed up into his eyes, which swirled with desire.

“You have a little.” Aero pointed to his mouth, and she tipped her head to the side in confusion.

“I’ll get it,” he whispered, moving closer and hovering his mouth over hers. Sam’s lips tingled in anticipation of his touch, and she closed her eyes, waiting.

Aero gulped before pressing his lips to hers, her mouth cold from the ice cream. His tongue swiped across her lip, and she moaned, reaching out with her free hand and holding the back of his head. The kiss went on and on, deepening as they tasted each other, only pulling apart to breathe.

“Aero,” Sam panted, leaning her forehead against his. “Should we go back to our room?”

His heart lurched, not in fear but in excitement and anticipation.

“Yes,” he breathed, his heart pattering in his chest.

“Let’s go.” Sam stood, taking his hand and leading him toward their hotel.

She moved quickly, her eagerness making him laugh as he followed along behind her.

Inside their hotel room, Aero sat her on the end of the bed and held her face gently in his hands.

“Slow, Sammy, please,” he pleaded, and she nodded. She was getting ahead of herself, so desperate to have him, to finally give in to everything he made her feel, that she was forgetting to ease him into it.

“Sorry.” Sam giggled, and he smiled.

As much as Aero wanted her, he wanted to savor her, to sear every second into his memory, and to remember this night for the rest of his life. He was also nervous, concerned that if he moved too quickly, he would either panic and ruin everything, or it would be over too fast and he would miss the details of the experience. He was going to take his time with Sam.
