“I never said that you were a child, Wren,” Yonkers insisted.

“I thought that we got past all that,” she said. “You said that you don’t think of me as Blade’s kid sister anymore.”

“Wait, what?” Blade asked. “You’re thinking about my sister now?”

“Not in the way that you think that I’m thinking about her,” Yonkers said.

Trixie stood between the two men. “Before this gets any more complicated, can you just go out to the truck and grab the gifts?” she asked. “We can discuss how Yonkers thinks about Wren later.”

“He better not be thinking about Wren at all,” Blade growled.

“I’m a grown woman and if I’m okay with him thinking about me, then, there’s nothing to discuss,” Wren insisted.

“Again, it’s Christmas and Blade has a present for me in his pocket that I’m dying for him to give to me,” Trixie announced.

“You got her a gift that can fit in your pocket?” Wren asked.

“What did you get her, a ring or something?” Yonkers teased. Blade felt all the blood drain from his face when his friend asked him that.

“Wait, you got me a ring?” Trixie asked.

“Well, shit,” Blade grumbled. “I wasn’t planning on doing it like this, but yes, I got you a ring.” He pulled the box out from his jacket pocket and opened it. Trixie’s gasp filled the room and Wren actually squealed out loud.

“Will you marry me, Trixie?” he asked. “It’s all I want for Christmas.”

Trixie

Trixie wasn’t sure if Blade had just said what she thought he had, but then again, everyone was looking at her to answer. “Did you just ask me to marry you?” she asked.

“I did,” Blade said, grinning from ear to ear. “What do you say, Trixie?” That was a good question, and she had no idea what to tell him. She had no answer. Hell, she was caught completely off guard and feeling overwhelmed, to say the least.

“Throwing out a proposal wasn’t fair,” Trixie whispered, “and, you did it in front of Wren so I can’t tell you no. I just can’t do this right now, Blade,” she sobbed. She wasn’t sure why she was so upset, but she was. He had caught her off guard and that was something that Trixie hated. She liked to be the one in control of her life and ever since Blade had gotten involved in her safety, he had taken over and taken her precious control from her. Now, he was trying to force her to say something that she wasn’t sure she was ready to say.

“I didn’t know that telling you that I love you and asking you to marry me was such a big deal,” Blade breathed. “I thought that you might feel the same way about me.” She did, but that didn’t mean that she wanted to be forced into telling him that she was in love with him or accepting his marriage proposal before she was ready to.

“I just need some time to think,” she insisted. “I need to go for a walk or something.”

“You can’t do that,” Blade insisted.

“I’m not going to have you telling me what I can and can’t do, Blade. That’s the whole point of this. You tell me how I should feel, what my future should be and now, you’re telling me that I can’t go for a walk,” she spat.

“If you go for a walk, I’m going too,” Blade insisted.

“That isn’t necessary. I have the mace that you bought me in my pocket, and I’ll use it on anyone who approaches me. But I just need some air. I need to think, Blade. Can you just give me a few minutes? I won’t go far,” she promised.

“This is not a good idea,” Blade growled.

“You need to let me go, Blade,” Trixie whispered. She turned and walked to the front door, grabbing her jacket on the way out. She was going to walk for as long as Blade allowed, and when he came looking for her, hopefully, she’d have some answers for him, and her mind wouldn’t be as muddled as it currently felt.

As soon as the cool air hit her, she felt a little bit better. She was overreacting, but she had no idea why. Trixie had wanted Blade most of her life and now that she had him, she was throwing it all away.

“Hey, wait up,” Wren shouted. She hadn’t even gotten around the block before her best friend caught up with her.

“Why are you following me, Wren?” Trixie asked.

“Because no matter what happens between you and my brother, you’ll always be my best friend. I’m on your side, no matter what,” Wren said. Trixie pulled her friend in for a hug and released her.

“I’m not sure what’s wrong with me,” she admitted. “I’m being an idiot. I’ve been in love with your brother for a long time now but telling him that seems to be impossible for me,” Trixie admitted. “I think that I’ve fucked everything up.”
