“Hey, hey…” said Kai. “Let’s get through this life first before anyone kills anything. I just called to update you on Cody and Leo, although Leo thinks I’m pushing you into a date, so just act surprised and brow-beaten, okay?”

Quint laughed. “Just come to me when you can. I have a house to show you I think you’re gonna love.”

* * *

Blades of sunlightpierced through the crack in the curtains of Cody’s bedroom, landing on the crumpled bedsheets.

“I don’t ever want to leave this bed,” whispered Cody.

Leo’s chest rose as he closed his eyes and heaved out an ecstatic sigh.

“Me neither. I’ll let you off for the fact it’s only a double.”

Leo looked at his watch.

“Shite, I’ve got a phone interview withThe Independentin, like, ten minutes and I haven’t even prepped for it. Where’s my notebook? Oh, bloody hell, I’d better have brought it with me.”

Cody pointed to his rucksack on the floor.

“As much as I hate to move, I’ve gotta at leasttryand get my shit together.” He locked eyes with Cody again. “Know this, though… even if I fuck this up because I had copious amounts of sex instead of prepping like a good boy, it was totally worth it.”

Leo lunged forward to kiss Cody’s cheek, then sprang up to rummage through his rucksack, finding and pulling out his treasured Moleskine.

“Beauty!”

Leo tapped the notebook against his hand and threw it onto the bedside cabinet. Cody smiled, unable to muster the power of speech, questioning in his mind how on Earth sex could have been that good.

“Right. Shower time,” said Leo.

Cody perked his head up.

“Shower time?”

“I have to make myself look beautiful. It’s a Zoom call.”

Cody propped his head on his palm. “It’s pointless you going in there. I’m only gonna make you all sweaty again after the interview.”

Leo threw a pillow at Cody’s head. “To be continued.”

As his gaze followed Leo into the ensuite, Cody started to drift back into reality again, the contentment of his orgasm dissolving. He rolled over and contemplated Leo’s notebook on the bedside table.

Curiosity took over as he grabbed the book and started to flick through it, the ink on the pages a veritable spider’s web of ideas from the workings of that brilliant mind. But as he flicked through, he landed on one page that drew his eye more than any other.

In the silence of the night, your sleep is so deep

I’ll be here for your awakening and promise not to weep

I lead you in my dreams because I know you’ll find your way

Back to me where you belong, in my heart where you will stay

The words, these… words. They were what Cody had uttered to Tim only once before, all those long years ago. Tim had died that day as Cody sat on his bed, whispering that final ode in his ear.

A part of Leo had remembered being Tim, Cody was sure of that. And now he was sure of everything, how Leo would be his no matter what life or death threw at them....
