Hawk looked at me, his eyes funny looking as his mouth opened, almost as if he wanted to say something. Instead, blood bubbled up from his mouth as he stumbled towards me as I heard Scab laugh.

“Dad?” I gasped in horror as Hawk fell into my arms. “DAD!”

Holding him in my arms, several guns went off as I fell to the ground with Hawk in my arms. Holding him close, I shook my head as his eyes never left mine. Blood oozed from his mouth.

“Come on, Dad. It’s not bad,” I whispered, tears running down my face.

“Solomon, move,” Indigo ordered, as Ravage ran to get help.

Ignoring my brother, I held Hawk to me.

Shaking my head, I pleaded, “I’ll be good. I promise. Please don’t go.”

“Shit,” Indigo cursed. “Solomon, I need to see where the bullet entered.”

I held my dad firmly as others came rushing out of the forest.

“Hawk needs a hospital fast,” I heard Indigo say. “Solomon won’t let me near him.”

Ignoring everyone, I looked at Hawk, who hadn’t taken his eyes off me when his hand reached for mine. Grabbing his hand, I brought it up to my lips and whispered, “I didn’t mean to run away. I’ll do better next time. I promise. Please, Dad. I can’t lose you too.”

Hawk smiled at me, then slowly closed his eyes.

“Dad?” I barely said, shaking him, trying to get him to wake.

“Solomon?”

Looking up, I could barely see my Sunshine through my tears as she kneeled beside me, her eyes filling with tears. “Baby, I need you to let him go. Everyone wants to help, but you need to let him go.”

Shaking my head, I whispered, “I can’t. I can’t let him go.”

Sunny sobbed. “I know, baby, but you must. You did so good and Hawk would be so proud of you, but he needs help. Help we can’t give him.”

“He saved me,” I barely said, holding him close to me as if he were my lifeline. “My dad saved me.”

I thought it odd.

I never needed a lifeline until I met Sunny.

She was it for me.

I never considered Hawk as one too.

“The paramedics are here,” someone said as two men rushed over.

“Come on, baby,” Sunny coaxed, taking my hand. “Help is here. You can let him go now.”

Letting her pull me away, I laid my dad on the ground and got to my feet, just as my legs buckled, sending me back down to the ground. The last thing I heard was Sunny scream my name as the familiar darkness surrounded me.

Chapter Thirty-Nine

Sunny

Sitting beside his bed, I held his hand as a machine breathed for him. He’d not woken up once since he collapsed. That was two days ago. Since then, the doctors rushed him into surgery twice because his lung kept collapsing.

Seeing him holding Hawk, crying, begging his dad not to leave him was something I would never forget. The total hurt and despair radiating off him broke my heart.

For a man who believed he had no one in this world, I tried to imagine his astonishment when he discovered the multitude of unexpected visitors who had come to wish him well. When Phantom informed the other clubs that Scab and Chaos were dead, their happiness was short-lived when she told them about Hawk and Solomon.
