Looking up, I stared into his light blue eyes and whispered, “Thank you.”

He didn’t say anything, not that I expected him to.

Taking the book from him, I softly gasped as our fingers lightly touched and that was when I saw it.

A flicker.

A spark of something in his eyes.

“Sunny?” Reaper stood, walking over to me as Chaos walked in with Bayou. “Why don’t you want to go to prom?”

“Prom? Who’s going to prom?” Chaos smiled.

“Not you, asshole,” Bayou grinned, shoving him to the side so he could get to the coffeemaker.

“Sunny, I asked you a question,” Reaper said softly.

I should have never come in here. I just wanted to study. I didn’t know why everyone was so interested in me going to prom.

It was just a dance.

Looking down at the floor, I whispered. “No one asked me.”

As soon as the words left my mouth, I heard him growl.

Snapping my head to his, I tried not to let the prom situation bother me, but I wasn’t any good at hiding anything from him. It was bad enough that I was younger than the graduating class. I knew no one wanted to take a baby to the prom.

I just wanted to forget about it and study.

However, the second our eyes locked, he knew how much it upset me. I knew it was just a dance. A stupid, frilly, magical dance. I wanted what all girls wanted. I wanted to get dressed up in a pretty dress and celebrate my accomplishments. I wanted a handsome boy to hold me as he danced with me under the twinkling lights.

I wanted to experience my first kiss.

I wanted it all.

Mainly, I wanted the memory of that magical night.

“What do you mean no one asked you?” Chaos asked, looking from me to Reaper. “That doesn’t make any sense. Look at her. She’s fucking gorgeous. Any boy would give his left nut to take her to prom.”

Bayou chuckled. “She just turned seventeen, Chaos. Any boy’s nut goes near her he better start digging his own grave.”

“What about Billy? He’s about her age,” Chaos suggested, and that was when he moved. Before I could blink, Sandman had Chaos hanging against the wall, his hand tight around Chaos’ throat as Chaos tried unsuccessfully to breathe.

None of us moved.

“No.”

“Sandman, let him go,” Reaper ordered.

When Sandman only tightened his hand, causing Chaos lips to turn blue, I walked up to him, lightly touched his wrist, and whispered, “Please. Let him go.”

Sandman looked down at me, then released him.

Chaos fell to the floor, coughing and gasping for air.

“Thank you.”

He nodded, then quickly left.
