“I’m making her a shell lei at school,” Jax admitted, then smiled. “I can ask Ms. Nalla if you can make one too. She’s cool. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind.”

Two days later, I sat in a room full of kids as they all laughed and giggled as I tried to squeeze my body into one of their small chairs. In the end, I just sat on the floor and watched intently as Ms. Nalla went over the instructions for making a shell lei necklace.

Chapter Ten

Jessica

Several days later, I was sitting at the nurses’ station in the ICU unit when the elevator doors opened. It was after two in the morning, so visitors were unheard of this early in the morning. However, when I looked up and saw who walked out of the elevator, I slowly stood, my heart frantically pumping as I eased around the counter.

Tears formed in my eyes as she walked towards me.

I couldn’t believe she was here.

When she smiled, I ran to her, gathering her in my arms as I cried.

“It’s okay, Jessie. I’m here now.”

“I wanted to call you, but I didn’t know how to get a hold of you.”

“Montana called me,” she whispered, hugging me tight. “He told me everything.”

Sniffing, I released her, wiping my eyes. “Are you home for good?”

Remi slowly shook her head. “No, just for the night. Where is she?”

“In room seven,” I muttered.

Taking her hand, I walked with her as she asked, “How is she?”

“She’s holding on. Solomon never leaves her side. Jesus, Remi, it’s bad. The accident should have killed her, but it didn’t.”

“I was told she is pregnant.”

I nodded. “Yeah. The baby is still alive. Barely. Dr. Claudia had to do a cervical cerclage. So far, it’s working.”

“How is Solomon?”

“He’s barely holding it together. He hasn’t left that room. Not once. He keeps talking to her as if he expects her to open her eyes any moment.”

“What do the doctors say?”

I sighed. “They are not as optimistic. Her brain activity is still minimal. The swelling has gone down, but only time will tell.”

“Montana has offered to help in any way he can. Whatever Sunny needs, he will make sure she gets it. He has instructed me to give you his personal number. He owes me, so when you call him, make sure you ask for everything my sister might need,” she said, handing me a small sheet of paper.

Gripping it tightly, I smirked. “Got it. Milk him for all he’s worth.”

Carefully opening the door to Sunny’s room, I whispered, “Solomon, there is someone here to see Sunny.”

Silence.

I knew he wouldn’t say anything.

Walking in, I found him asleep, with his head on her bed as he held Sunny’s hand. Walking around the bed, I carefully touched his shoulder, which caused him to stir.

“What? What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, sweetie,” I said, rubbing his back. “Remi is here to see her sister.”
