Solomon looked towards the door as he slowly stood, his hand never leaving Sunny’s. I noticed immediately that his demeanor changed. No longer the solemn, worried husband, but now a fear permeated around him.

“Hello, Solomon.”

“Remi,” he muttered, as the pallor drained from his face. He reached for my hand, gripping it tightly as his hand shook.

Something was wrong.

Looking from Remi to Solomon, I didn’t understand what was wrong. Solomon had been Remi’s bodyguard. They knew each other. Yet, looking at them, it was as if they were strangers.

“Is it okay if I have a moment with my sister? Alone?”

I heard Solomon gulp as he looked from Sunny to me.

“Remi,” I whispered. “Solomon doesn’t leave her side.”

“I understand that, but I would like a moment alone with my sister.”

Solomon’s hand tightened as Sunny’s heart-rate monitor picked up.

Something was seriously wrong with this visit.

It was almost as if Sunny could feel Solomon’s worry and she was telling me not to make him leave. I’d seen many strange things in my days of nursing, but one thing I relied on was my gut when it came to the patient.

“Remi, maybe you should do this visit later when Sunny is awake.”

Remi never took her eyes off Solomon when she asked. “Is that how you want things, Solomon?”

My brother stood stock still.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“For what?” Remi challenged.

“For everything.”

“You mean lying to me? Making me believe I killed my husband? Or your part in the destruction of my marriage?”

The heart rate machine increased as Solomon gulped.

“All I am asking is for a few minutes alone with my sister. I think after everything that has happened you at least owe me that. Don’t you, Solomon?”

My brother looked at me, pleading.

Before I could answer him, Sunny’s monitor started blaring.

Releasing his hand, I rushed over to the machine, hitting a button. Placing my stethoscope in my ears, I listened to her heartbeat right before I hit the blue button on the wall.

“Remi, I need you to leave. Now,” I ordered before turning to Solomon. “Stand over there, Solomon. The doctors are coming.”

“What’s wrong?” he asked worriedly.

“I don’t know, sweetie,” I muttered, listening to her heart once more as the doors crashed open, and in walked Bones and Stitch, who both stopped for a split second to look at Remi, before rushing over to Sunny. Three more nurses ran into the room behind them.

Standing next to Solomon, I wrapped myself around him, holding him tightly as we watched the doctors work to stabilize Sunny’s heartbeat. From my vantage point, I could see Remi across the room. Her eyes never strayed from Solomon.

Without a second thought, I left Solomon standing in fear as he watched the doctors work on his Sunshine, as I took Remi by her arm, escorting her from the room. Out in the hallway, I rounded on the woman I considered one of my closest friends and asked. “Just what in the hell was that? Do you understand the gravity of your sister’s situation? She is barely hanging on. The only reason she is still breathing is because that man in there is willing her back to life and you go in there and ask him to leave? What the hell, Remi?!”

My friend sighed, rubbing the back of her neck. “I know. I’m sorry. When I saw him next to her, all I could think about was what he did to me.”
