“What if she wakes up and I’m not here?”

“But you will be,” I smiled, turning my head to the left. “See? The bed is right there, baby. All you have to do is let go of her hand.”

He shook his head. “I can’t do that.”

“Yes, you can, because you are going to let your sister take over for a few hours. You will still be in the room, and I promise you, I will not let go of her hand until you wake.”

“Why didn’t your momma ever tell us that love hurts?”

“Oh, baby,” I sniffed, my eyes watering. “Because Mom never knew love. Not like we know it. Mom never got to experience the joy and the happiness that love brings. All she knew was pain.”

“I tried to kill him that day.”

“I know,” I nodded. “I remember.”

It was one of my most vivid memories. The day Solomon tried to save our mother from Toxic. He did what Mom and I couldn’t. Even at a young age, he knew the difference between good and evil. His need to protect rose to the surface and gave him the courage to do what we couldn’t. That one action cost him dearly, culminating in the man he was today. Still sweet and gentle, but deadly.

“He was a bad man, Jessie. A really bad man.”

“Solomon, he’s dead now. He can’t hurt us anymore. He can’t hurt mom anymore.”

“Someone tried to hurt my Sunshine.”

“It was an accident.”

He looked at me and shook his head. “No, it wasn’t. I heard Bullseye.”

I sighed.

Shit.

Looking over my shoulder, I wondered if I should call Savage in here. I didn’t want to be the one to tell him what everyone knew. It was bad enough that I kept it from him. Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath and spoke. “No, sweetheart, it wasn’t an accident. Someone ran Sunny off the road. It was deliberate.”

I said nothing more as Solomon leaned over and kissed Sunny’s hand before getting to his feet. Following, I watched as he released her hand and walked out of the room.

Dear God in heaven... what did I just do?

Chapter Eleven

Sunny

I woke up with a start, my heart beating furiously in my chest. Sitting up, I looked around the bleak barren area as a low, thick fog rolled towards me. Dark shadows moved around the fog, trying to get closer to me. Goosebumps rose over my skin, sending a chill down my spine.

Something moved in the distance.

I wasn’t alone.

“Hello!” my voice echoed all around me. “Solomon!”

Slowly getting to my feet, I looked around the desolate place.

Where was I?

“Are you sure you want to know?”

Turning, I stumbled back, falling on my butt as I looked up at the two familiar faces I hadn’t seen since they died. Both were still young. Still beautiful, they hadn’t changed since I last saw them.

Long gone from this world, I blinked twice to make sure I wasn’t seeing things.
