Growling, I made my presence known as the doctors, and Jessica all turned to face me. Walking past them, I never took my eyes off hers as I returned to the spot I’d been sitting in for weeks. Taking her hand in mine, I said nothing, as Bones clearly said, “Sunny, you are still recovering from a devastating accident. You almost died.”

“But I didn’t and I’m alive. I have all my faculties. Minus a broken leg, I’m fine. I need to be at home with my family,” my woman said resolutely. I could tell from the tone in her voice she was serious. Nothing they could say would change her mind.

Taking my seat, I just looked at Sunny, relieved she was once again with me. I’d never been so scared before in my life and now that she was back, I was never letting her go.

“No, you’re not,” Dr. Claudia jumped in. “Your body is still healing, Mrs. Goldman. You suffered a tremendous amount of trauma. I don’t think you are comprehending the severity of the trauma you suffered. You almost lost the baby. I had to sew up your cervix. I’m still not sure that you will be able to carry the baby to term. You need to stay in bed.”

“I can do that at home. I need to be there for my husband and daughter. They need me. My brother does too.”

I knew that stubborn tone.

Her eyes said it all.

She made her mind up.

“The clubhouse has an infirmary, Bones. You know that. Why can’t she convalesce there until she’s back on her feet?” Ink asked. “Hell, my sister Karlyn is still in a coma at the clubhouse. You monitor her there and we all tend to her. We can do the same for Sunny.”

“Karlyn is different, and you know it,” Bones sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “She’s been in a coma for months now. Sunny’s just waking up from a coma. She’s had major surgery and with her pregnancy, she needs to stay in bed.”

“And I can do that at home,” my woman argued. “I want to go home. You can’t make me stay here. I will sign an AMA if I have to.”

“What is the biggest worry, doc?” Bullseye piped up as everyone looked at him. As the acting president of the club, the buck stopped with him. Whatever he decided, it would be final.

“Everything,” Bones stated. “Sunny suffered a major trauma. She should have died from her injuries. Her leg still needs to be immobilized. She’s on a regimen of antibiotics to prevent infection. One little cold will set her back and that’s not mentioning her pregnancy.”

“Bones is right,” Dr. Claudia added. “My primary concern is the baby. As you all know, I had to sew up her cervix to keep her from miscarrying. Right now, the baby isn’t as strong as I would hope. Sunny needs to stay calm and relax as much as possible.”

“You mentioned before her HCG levels?” Slaughter asked. “Have they improved?”

Dr. Claudia nodded. “They have begun to rise again, but they are still below the norm. I’m afraid if we send her home, the drama of club life and the constant stress of her family will be too much. The cervical cerclage is only a temporary measure. If she becomes upset, overstressed, or overworked, she could lose the baby, and then there is nothing I can do to stop it.”

“How long?” Stella, Digger’s wife, asked, stepping forward.

“Excuse me?”

“How long will Sunny need to stay immobilized and stress-free?”

“She’s only twelve weeks along. If she can make it to twenty-six weeks, the baby has a fifty-fifty chance at living. Ideally, I would like to see her make it to thirty-four weeks. The longer the baby stays in the womb, the better. I’ve already noted in her chart that she will need a C-section. I’m not risking her giving birth naturally.”

“Then that’s exactly what’s going to happen,” Stella firmly said. “Us ladies will make damn sure Sunny has everything she needs because that’s what we do, Doc. We are a family and when one of us is in need, we rally. If Sunny needs a Zen pregnancy, then that’s exactly what she’s going to get.”

“That’s easier said than done,” Massacre whispered as Player nodded, only to gulp when several of the women glared at him, along with Player’s wife.

“Discharge her,” I said, never taking my eyes off her as she smiled at me. I wanted my Sunshine at home. I trusted the women of the club, and no one ever went against Stella. What she said was law. Even Bullseye feared her.

If Stella said my Sunshine would be fine, then I believed her.

Bullseye stepped forward.

“You heard my brother. Do it.”

Chapter Thirteen

Sandman

My Sunshine had been home for almost a week when Bullseye told me to join him in church. I didn’t want to leave Sunny, but with Jessica, Stella, and Jules hovering over her, I reluctantly nodded and followed. I hated the idea of being away from her. She still needed me with her. She was still recovering and with her stuck in bed, it was my job to make sure she had everything she needed.

Plus, Sunny had started a new book, and it was getting good.
