“Katherine?”

“Yes, honey. I know coma patients experience many things. Some don’t remember anything, while others recount vivid dreams and occurrences. I heard you speaking to me. I tried to find you, but it was so dark. I couldn’t see you in the darkness. Then she was there. She needed me to wake up and save you before you made a mistake.

“What mistake?”

“I don’t know. She never said.”

Solomon frowned as he looked at me. I could see him contemplating my words. I knew it frustrated him when things made no sense, but I couldn’t give him the answer if I didn’t know it myself.

Reaching for his hand, he quickly took mine.

“How was the meeting?”

He shrugged.

I smirked. “That good, huh?”

“It was okay.”

“You know, I was thinking that maybe later tonight, after Soleil gets her bath, we could watch a movie. You know, like we did before the accident.”

He smiled and nodded.

Soleil was asleep between us as Solomon turned off the television. Laying with my arms around our daughter, my hands combing through her hair, I whispered, “She is so perfect.”

“You are too,” Solomon said, rolling towards us, his arm reaching across to rest on my hip as he softly looked at me. I could live in this moment forever. Just us, in our bed, where everything was perfect. When we were like this, the chaos of the world faded away.

Nothing else mattered.

All my worries and fears faded with him by my side.

Soleil snuggled closer as she sucked on her thumb. I had been trying to break her of that habit before the accident happened. I was on the verge of succeeding, only to find myself right back where I started. Now, my little girl never left my sight. I knew she didn’t understand. What she comprehended was that I was hurt and the expression of pain on her face mirrored the same level of anguish that I was experiencing.

I never wanted to do that to her.

“We are all she has,” I added, knowing he was listening to me intently. He always did. “Once I emerged from the coma and fully grasped the extensive period I had been asleep, a wave of worry washed over me. What would happen if something happened to me, you, or both of us? I don’t want Soleil growing up with neither of us, Solomon. She needs us both.”

He slowly nodded in agreement.

“I promised myself that I would never ask you to go against your nature, but I have to break that promise, Solomon. I need you to make me a promise.”

“Anything.”

“Promise me you won’t go after Scab. Let the club handle this one.”

Solomon said nothing.

I knew it was a big ask. That what I was asking went against everything he believed, but I couldn’t take the chance where he was concerned. Scab scared the crap out of me. He had already stabbed Solomon once before. I couldn’t have Solomon getting hurt by that man again, or worse.

“He hurt you.”

“I know, and I know you have every right to punish him, but I can’t get Kitty’s words out of my head. She said I needed to stop you from making a mistake. What if this was the mistake she was talking about? What if you go after Scab and don’t come home?”

“I will always come home to you.”

“You can’t promise me that, Solomon. What should have been a normal drive home almost cost me my life. None of us know what will happen when we walk out the door. Life isn’t simple, honey. There are dangers everywhere. You taught me that. The only thing certain in this life is death.”

He sighed, rolled onto his back, and looked at the ceiling.
