The brothers didn’t wait as they each started grabbing weapons.

Slamming a clip into my Glock, I ordered, “Mic up, everyone.”

Shoving extra clips into my jeans, I headed out back to find total pandemonium as Frank and Scribe were moving in sync through the trees, shooting and killing moving objects at random.

“Pyro, activate the fire suppression system. Then call over to the Golden Skulls and find out what the fuck is going on!” I shouted as a man broke the tree line, heading straight for us, shooting.

Taking aim, I didn’t think as I fired off two kill shots.

The fucker dropped dead.

“Fan out!”

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Remi

Diamondback MC, Lawton, Oklahoma.

“This is crazy. They want me because Sandman is my brother-in-law!” I shouted at Kansas and his brothers, Dakota and Arizona.

“No,” Dakota growled, leaning against the back wall in Kansas’ office. “They want you because you are the wife to the President of the club and don’t give a damn if the two of you are estranged. The fact is, Remi, if Satan’s Angels get their hands on you, you know damn well that Reaper will tear apart this earth to get you back.”

“I know that!” I yelled. “That’s what I’m saying. The kids and I need to leave before someone gets hurt. I’m so tired of this shit. Everywhere I go, people die. I just want it to stop!”

“Remi,” Kansas softly said, sitting next to me. “I get that you’re scared, but leaving right now will only put you in more danger. You and the kids need to stay here, where we can protect you.”

Leaning forward, I covered my face with my hands.

This was never going to end.

“Can I have a moment with Remi, please?”

Looking up, I spotted Shadow standing in the doorway. I had heard that he found his woman and that she was instrumental in helping him fight the nightmares that plagued him.

I was happy for him. I really was, but I didn’t want to talk anymore. I wanted to grab my kids and leave.

I wanted to run as far as I could and just disappear.

Kansas and his brothers said nothing as they left Kansas’ office, leaving me alone with Shadow, the former executioner of the Golden Skulls MC.

“You want to run?”

I nodded. “Yes. I’m tired of all of this, Shadow. I can’t do it anymore. My whole life has been nothing but blood and death. I deserve happiness. I’ve earned it.”

The handsome younger brother of Ghost, the club’s former VP, nodded. “You are right about that. If anyone deserves happiness, it’s you.”

“There is a but in there somewhere, Shadow. Just say what you need to say.”

“He’s only human, Remi. He’s not perfect by any means. He makes mistakes like all of us. I think in some way you still see that fifteen-year-old boy in a cage. Your perfect white knight. And because your white knight fell off his horse, you don’t know what to believe anymore.”

“I don’t believe in fairy tales, Shadow. I never did.”

“Yes, you do. You always have. I remember the scared girl who showed up at the clubhouse that night, all beaten to hell and barely hanging on. The second your eyes landed on Reaper, you allowed him to rescue you. Regardless of what you think now, your white knight kept his promise to you.”

“What are you talking about?”

“He promised that no matter what, he would protect you. While I don’t condone how everything played out, you know damn well everything he did was for you. Reaper’s not perfect, Remi. He’s a man. Flesh and blood. We all make mistakes, trust the wrong people, do the wrong things, but it’s how we move forward that separates the men from the boys. Reaper is out there, still protecting you, knowing damn well you hate him.”
