She pulled at me in a way I’d never felt before. My pheromones had gone wild the moment I’d heard her voice. My instincts were now screaming at me, demanding I claim her.

I’d never reacted this way to any woman, even omegas I’d met in the past. It was raw and instinctive, coming from deep within the beast that was my alpha nature.

I’d heard of scent matches between alphas and omegas. It was a sign of a true mate match and resulted in this kind of pull. From all accounts, it was incredibly rare.

But Lexie didn’t have a scent, unless it was incredibly subtle, and I couldn’t get close enough to her to find out for sure. She flinched or backed away from me every time I tried to get near her. Plus, Dave had said she was a beta.

It was impossible. Alphas didn’t feel this primal pull towards a beta.

Sam had reacted to her the same way, too. And he rarely noticed women, even omegas. For the last few years, our assigned task and worrying about Maia had consumed him.

Now we were here, and we’d finally found his sister. I was the only one who knew just how much that meant to him. Yet he had been just as fixated on this woman as I was from the first moment she had spoken.

We’d spun simultaneously and instantly, like we were one. Like we were both hers.

I shook my head and took a deep breath. The last hour had been crazy, with attempting to get through the fence and reach Maia, the tense confrontation we’d had with Damon and his guys, Sam’s shock over Maia insisting she stay here with her multiple mates, then the enemy breach and Maia acting as bait to flush Ronan out.

Now this. I didn’t know what to make of it. None of this was remotely what I had expected when I’d cased this place a few days ago, looking for Maia.

As I turned reluctantly, forcing myself to focus on the task at hand, one of the tied-up alphas in the back gave me a discrete signal meant for a handler in an undercover situation. It meant they had information relevant to the mission at hand and needed to be pulled out.

I tried not to stumble in shock when he looked up briefly, through his long fall of dark hair, and I saw his face.

I yelled to the surrounding alphas to get up, grabbed the nearest alpha, and hauled him to his feet to cover my reaction. While Dave and Sam focussed on cutting duct tape from around ankles, I maneuvered myself towards him and gave the ‘run’ signal as I bent down.

As soon as I sliced the duct tape, he jumped to his feet and knocked me off balance, before he spun and kicked me in the stomach. He took off like a shot and I groaned.

I took off after him, blocking him with my body, not wanting Dave to shoot him, then tackled him to the ground. We tussled briefly, but he couldn’t do much with his hands still tied. I quickly got my knee on his throat and growled at him.

“Problem?” Sam asked, as he stood watching me, seemingly unconcerned.

“No problem,” I said. “This guy just wants to dance. I’m going to show him how it’s done. You go on ahead, we’re going to catch up.” I winked in Sam’s direction.

“Don’t mess him up too bad. I don’t want to be spoon feeding him,” Sam replied casually and moved away. He gave me a discrete signal that meant ‘do your thing’ as he herded the alphas from behind, while Dave led the way.

“Punch me,” the alpha mouthed to me. Well, alright then. I pulled him to his feet roughly, pushed him up against the nearest wall, then punched him hard in the stomach. He doubled over with a loud, “Oomph.” I followed it up with a punch to the face I knew would create a large bruise but wouldn’t cause any actual damage.

I noticed some of the intruder alphas eyeing us discretely before they rounded the back of the dining hall and disappeared.

“What the fuck, Pala. You could have pulled that kick.”

“Sorry, Dio. Some of these guys are hardcore. I needed it to be convincing.”

“Yeah, okay.” I shrugged. I got it. He’d just winded me. I tried to take a deep breath without wincing embarrassingly.

“How the hell did I not see you in the group when we took everyone down?” I asked as I sliced through the duct tape on his wrists to free him. I couldn’t stand talking to him while he was tied up.

Pala shook out his wrists lightly as he glanced up at me, his eyes running all over my face. “I recognized you and Sam as soon as you came out of the trees, but your attention was on the guys behind you. I blended into the background so I wouldn’t distract you or have my cover blown if you recognized me.”

“You were always good at blending into the background, but now you’re like a ninja or some shit.”

He gave me a shy smile that brought so many memories flooding back.

I reached up and hugged him. Not able to hold back from touching him and making sure he was really here. “I’ve missed you, bro.”

“I’ve missed you too, brother. It’s been too long,” Pala said as he pulled me in harder with a tight grip while he rested his head on my shoulder.

Pala, Sam, and I had been inseparable in our teenage years. He’d lived on my family’s winery estate growing up, so I’d known him since before I could walk and we’d been best friends. When Sam came to stay with my family in his later teens, we’d both naturally gravitated to him. Back then, Pala could calm Sam down almost as well as I could.
