She shifted, sliding off my back to the floor next to me. And though I was able to move freely, the sudden absence of her left me with a strange cold feeling—and not just because of body temperature. I ignored it.

Pushing to stand, I looked down to finally see Hannah, sitting with her knees pulled up to her chest, seemingly doing a breathing exercise.

Now that I could get a look at her, I was unsurprised to see she was as gorgeous as her voice sounded. Her eyes sparkled like emeralds behind long lashes. Her dark blonde hair was pulled up into a wildly messy bun on top of her head, wisps of it coming out to frame her face. And from what I could see in this position, I was fucking right about the curves. Dammit. Now was not the time to focus on that.

“You okay?” I leaned down and offered her my hand.

She looked up at me through those dark lashes, the first time we made eye contact searing in my brain forever.

“Sorry, just a little dizzy and nauseated.”

“That’s normal with what you’ve got going on. Plus, falling on top of me like that was probably not what the doctor meant when he said not to leave your bed.”

Her lips quirked up the tiniest bit. “Probably not.”

“Here, let me help you.”

She put her hand in mine, the softness of her skin not surprising me in the least. I pulled her up, and she wobbled, clearly off balance from the concussion. I pulled her against me to steady her, realizing too late that the move would reveal the semi I was currently sporting beneath my jeans. And yep, the feel of her against me had it twitching to life between our bodies.

Her eyes widened.

“Sorry, neighbor. The whole you-on-top-of-me thing had an effect.”

“Uh, clearly.”

I tried to angle my hips away from her, but it turned out my back was against the wall. Literally. I wasn’t much of a gentleman, anyway.

“You think you can stand on your own?”

“Yes.” Hannah’s face contorted in confusion and she closed her eyes. “Maybe. I don’t know.”

“I’m kinda stuck here. So how about you take a tiny step back and I’ll hold on to you and we’ll go from there.”

“Okay.”

“But no rush.”

“Right.”

She shuffled one foot back, just a few inches. The thick sock she wore helped it to slide across the wood. She did the same with the other foot. So far, so good. She backed her body away from mine, and I reluctantly let go of her, so she could balance on her own. For a moment, everything seemed okay. But as soon as she got accustomed to holding herself up, her face drained of color and her eyes widened again.

“Oh god.”

“What is it?”

“I’m gonna be sick.”

HANNAH

This was not happening. It could not be happening. I’d come to the conclusion that I must have been having some sort of stress-induced nightmare.

But as I heaved into the toilet again, depositing all of the liquid I had managed to get down in the six hours, I knew it was all too real.

A hand rubbed my back in soothing circles. I grimaced, stuck on a tightrope between feeling too sick to care and feeling more embarrassment than I ever had in my life.

“I think you’re finished for now.”
