“Well, I think you look much nicer now,” Jill said.

“Uh, thanks,” I said in a slow drawl.

Jill caught my eyes before she started apologizing, then realized I was only joking and said with a smile, “Well, you look fabulous and more than ready to see Jacob. He might be at his parents’ house in the library or working on Becca’s house.”

“Great!” I said. Realizing that was maybe a bit too loud, I said in a lower voice, “Okay, well, I’ll see you two later. Tell Sandy I was sorry to miss her this morning.”

“I’m sure she’ll understand,” Jill said, smiling.

“Who knows, I might be back sooner rather than later so I can tell her myself.” I was breathing faster now, and my hands were getting clammy.

“Just go say hi to Jacob, Millie. That’s all you’re doing, nothing else. And if you can’t find him, just come back here. There’s always more wedding planning to do,” Becca said with a laugh.

She turned me to face the front door and walked me to it. Opening the door, she gently pushed me into the hallway and then shut it again. Alone, I took a deep breath and told myself I could do this.

Jacob

Miti had foundme this morning and told me what a nice girl Millie was. I knew she was up to something when our walk this morning ended up in the library. She had guided me toward the section on our family history, which listed all the long wardens of this land that came from Mom’s side of the family. Clearly, Miti thought there was something here for me to learn from, or a way to calm my wolf down so I didn’t grab Millie and make a run for it. Or maybe there was something in these books that could charm her and make her mine before Bruno made a move.

I was halfway through my grandfather’s story when I heard footsteps outside the door. It wasn’t one of my family members as the steps were too loud. A human, and it wasn’t Jill or Becca. It wasn’t until the knob turned that I caught a whiff of Millie’s scent. It can’t be!

I dropped the book, stood up, and looked down quickly to make sure I was presentable. Sighing with relief that I had decided to wear my nice jeans this morning instead of the holey ones, I looked up just in time to see the door open.

I basked in Millie’s smell as she appeared before me.

“You look like a rabbit when you twitch your nose like that,” she said.

I immediately stopped sniffing. A rabbit? I was a wolf, sweetheart. Nothing innocent about me.

“You’re up early,” I said. My target was here in front of me. I didn’t dare move in case I scared her away.Let her come to me.Though I wished she came a bit faster so I could grab her and plant her in my lap.

“Yeah, couldn’t sleep.”

“Something keep you up? Bubbie’s cooking can sometimes cause an upset stomach.”

“Not that,” she said with a laugh.

She had a beautiful laugh. I took a slow, deep breath to try and calm my wolf down. My anxiety level was going off the charts. Clamping my hands together to stop them from grabbing her, I willed my wolf back and told him to wait.

“It was nothing like that. Her cooking was fabulous, and it was really nice to meet your whole family.”

“She’ll be glad to hear that.” I waited to see if she would say what was on her mind, but she was looking everywhere but at me. “Was there something that you were looking for in here?”

“No, I . . . I was actually looking for you.”

“You were?” My wolf stilled for the first time since she came in. Our full attention was on her now. “Is there somethingIcan help you with?” I so hoped she said yes. I would help her with anything she needed.

“I don’t know. I . . .” She was looking at all the books around us, and I saw her eyes grow bigger as she took all of them in.

“Yeah, my family are book collectors,” I said in explanation. “Most of them are about our family history.”

“This is amazing!” she gushed. “You must have so much history in here.”

“We do,” I said, my fingers landing on the book I was just reading. The last passage flitted through my mind—where my grandfather had taken my grandmother to brunch. “Have you eaten yet?”

“No, I’ve just had coffee.”

My wolf cheered on the inside. “Well, that won’t do. Would you like to go to breakfast with me?”
