“I’d love to. Will anyone else be joining us?”

I paused. “Only if you want to.”Please say no.

“No, I know the girls are eating breakfast already, and I didn’t see anyone else awake when I came over here. I don’t want to wake anyone else up if they’re still sleeping.”

I was doubtful anyone was sleeping anymore; we were all early risers. But my heart soared that she had sought me out, and before Bruno too.

“Great! I have a place I like to frequent in town. I’ll take you there.” I put the book away and walked toward the door, feeling at ease when she settled herself by my side.

It wasn’t until we were seated in my car and on our way that I realized I hadn’t planned any of this. A diner wasn’t exactly the first place I wanted to take her on our first date. Was this a date? Had I screwed up already?I internally groaned, hoping I could turn this around.

Jacob

We arrivedat Rosey’s Diner in thirty minutes. We’d made small talk during the drive but otherwise just enjoyed each other’s company. Millie spent the ride looking around outside and commenting on how serene it was here. That made me smile, because it meant she liked it here, and I felt the calmest I had ever felt. But as we got closer to the diner, I started getting nervous. It was too early to go anywhere else but to the local coffee shop, which sold a number of baked goods. I groaned inside, wishing I’d had time to properly book a reservation at Angelo’s and formally invited her out on a date.

“This is where you eat breakfast a lot?” Millie asked as I pulled up.

“Yeah, they’ve got the best breakfast around, except for the Juniper Coffee Shop,” I said, pointing at the line two doors down. “They have the best baked goods.”

“I can see that. Maybe we should try that one day.”

I looked at her to see if I’d heard right. She was already thinking of a next time? My wolf preened in happiness, and I felt myself glowing too.

I opened the diner door for her, and we walked in to see Suzy. Upon seeing us, her eyes narrowed. A second later, she grabbed two menus and walked over to us, grinning so big I cringed. This was why I planned everything so we wouldn’t bump into people like Suzy, who thought she was the one for me.

“Hi, Jacob. Haven’t seen you in a long time. Have you been avoiding me?”

The purr that rolled off her words sent shivers up my spine, and not in a good way. I also hoped Millie didn’t notice the way she was sashaying her hips as she walked over. I released a breath and said, “Suzy, table for two please.” I put my hand on Millie’s lower back and felt her jolt at the contact before she immediately relaxed and settled her back against my hand. I smiled, thinking it felt right to touch her.

Ignoring the scowl that had come across Suzy’s face, we followed her to our seats. Throwing the menus on the table and giving me one last glare, Suzy stalked away.

“Did we offend her in some way?” Millie asked, picking up her menu but not opening it.

The look in her eyes was so innocent I didn’t know if this feeling of mine could be right. How could she be my mate?

“Only that I won’t give her the time of day. She’s been trying to get me to go on a date with her since middle school. I’m sorry you have to put up with it. On the plus side, the omelets here are really good.”

“Oh, I love omelets!”

When she said nothing else on the matter, I relaxed. Thank goodness that worked. The last thing I wanted to do was to talk about Suzy when all I wanted to do was to get to know Millie better.

“You never answered my question from earlier,” I said as I picked up my own menu.

“What question was that?”

“Was there something I could help you with?”

A soft pink blush blossomed on her cheeks as she opened her menu. I couldn’t look away from her even if I wanted to. “I think it’s already been answered.” A small smile spread across her face, and I couldn’t help but smile back.

She knew! She knew we were mates! How, I had no idea, but it didn’t matter. Her body was reacting to me being close by. On some fundamental level, she knew I was her mate. There was no way Bruno was going to win her when she was responding to me this way. My smile got bigger. I hadn’t felt this happy in a long time. I settled into my seat, ready to enjoy a nice long breakfast.

After ordering, I asked her, “How long have you been in the area?”

“Not long, but here in Sugarville, this is my first time.”

“I thought as much since you’d never met my family before.”

“That’s right, your family owns the whole town, don’t they?”
