“Good, you two are still here,” Denis said, reappearing in the living room. “Your clothes are in the dryer. You should go take a nice hot shower—separately, I suppose. Just don’t use up all my hot water!”

“Of course not, Denis. Millie will go first.”

I gave her a kiss on the lips, happy to see she was glowing when she stood up and walked away.

Once she was gone, Denis came and sat next to me. “You should claim her as soon as you can. I heard what almost happened to Brandon.”

“She’s human, Denis.”

“So am I. What does that matter?”

“She doesn’t know.”

“What . . . ? You haven’t told her?”

“Why would I tell her? I only just met her a week ago. It would scare her away right now.”

“Jacob McCullough.”

I held up my hand. “I know what I’m doing. I always have a plan.”

“I see how well your plans work out, if it’s anything based on today.”

“Ha. Today was an anomaly. I’m going to take her out on another date, and we’ll see where it goes from there. Maybe I’ll never have to tell her. You know that changing into wolf form is never my favorite thing to do.” My wolf growled at this, and I shifted on the seat, feeling uncomfortable at the tension between him and me.

“You are a silly boy, and you can tell your dad I told you so. You boys might think I chose this life, and partly I did, but if I had to do it all over again, I would have lived my life more and accepted who I was. I know I make others awkward, but I would have shrugged my shoulders and kept on living. I wouldn’t have holed myself up here for the rest of my life. Now it’s too late for me to go anywhere. Don’t make the same mistake I did, Jacob.”

We heard Millie coming out of the shower, and I got up before Denis could say anything more. His words rang truer than I wanted to admit.

Millie

“You went on a second date already?”I asked, watching Lira standing in a daze as she stared out of my window. I’d come home before dinner to find her in this state.

“I know. I don’t know what’s going on. He called me and I said yes. I didn’t even think!”

“That’s very unlike you,” I agreed.

“I know! What is going on, Millie?”

“I think you’re in love.”

“No!” Her eyes looked wild.

“What’s so bad about being in love?”

“It’s just not good, okay?”

I gave Lira a look, wondering where this was coming from. “Lira—”

“I don’t want to talk about it. What’s even weirder is he drove me back to his hometown, and we went to this place called Rosey’s—”

“Diner! Jacob took me there too.”

“Well, there was this girl—”

“Called Suzy.”

Lira planted her hands on her hips. “Are you going to let me tell my story or keep interrupting me?”
