“Say yes, Meher. Giveusa chance again?”

“Marriage is not just a chance, Ayaan. It’s a lifelong commitment,” I reply. “And I’m scared of the uncertainty that comes with it in our case. I’m afraid that one day, you’ll still choose to bring down my father, and I won’t be able to support you, and it’ll again create a rift between us.”

The elevator dings, and the doors open. I grab his hands which have cupped my face, and slowly move them away. With a composed resolve, I step into the elevator, accompanied by my guards, my gaze fixed on Ayaan for a moment longer than required. The doors are on the verge of closing when Ayaan strides forward and stops the doors of the elevator from closing. His eyes shine with determination as if he has made up his mind to convince me.

“Nothing can stand between us, Meher,” he declares. “Our marriage is inevitable, whether you are ready for it or not.”

I am startled by his resolve. He leaves the hold on the doors of the elevator for a moment, only to stop them again from closing and grins at me.

“King-8, Queen-5. The scoreboard resumes,” he proclaims before withdrawing his foot and letting the elevator doors close.

My mind races with conflicting emotions. I don’t know what to do. Ayaan is challenging me at every step. I don’t deny that I still love him. But this time, whatever he wants and the way he wants it is not the right way to move ahead. I just hope that we can find a way to make this work without hurting each other or our families.

CHAPTER 20

MEHER

I cuddle my pillow, unable to sleep as Ayaan’s twisted marriage proposal haunts my thoughts. So, I decide to call my friend Simran and spill the beans about everything that happened in the last two days. I fill her in about the dramatic proposal and the whole damage control aspect, and she hears me out patiently.

“Can you believe the nerve ofthatman?” I vent, frustration about Ayaan ambushing me evident in my voice.

“Isn’t that hot?” she teases.

“Simran, c’mon.” I groan.

She can’t contain her laughter.

“I know it’s absurd, but think about it, Meher. It’s a win-win situation for you. You get to marry the man you love, and your father’s political career and reputation are restored to its former glory.” Simran reasons.

I scrunch my nose, still annoyed.

“But he hurt me, Simran! And now he acts like he’s the boss, making all these demands. It’s just infuriating.”

“But he’s doing it all for you, Meher. To get you back,” Simran argues.

“Well, he should have asked me properly then, not with all this drama,” I retort.

Simran playfully teases, “Alright, then, don’t marry him. You said you’ve broken up with him, right? So, can I try my luck with him?”

My anger flares up. “I thought you liked Vishnu!”

Simran chuckles mischievously.

“I do, but Ayaan is also drop-dead gorgeous, not to mention intelligent and smoking hot.”

“Stay away from my Ayaan. He is all mine.” I huff, jealousy gnawing away at my insides.

Simran bursts into laughter.

“You just said he hurt you and you’ve broken up with him. And yet you cannot stand to see him with another woman. You still love him, Meher, don’t you? Just marry him and sort out your issues later.”

I ponder over her words, but then reality hits me.

“Dad will never agree to it. He despises Ayaan and his father.”

As I speak, I hear some commotion from outside my room.

“Simran, I’ll call you back.”
