I close my eyes briefly so he doesn’t see whatever he is claiming to see in them. His lips are already on my cheek, leaving their imprint when I open them again. My skin tingles where he has kissed, and I’m sure he’s aware of the effect he has on me.

I meet his gaze again, and I can sense his triumphant grin without even looking at him.

“You’re impossible, Ayaan.”

He chuckles.

“Wait for us to get married. I’m going to pamper you with kisses day and night,” he declares, his tone dripping with promise. “You can’t resist me, baby.”

I’m momentarily stunned but I gather my wits, determined not to let his words unravel me completely.

“Don’t assume I’ll be giving in to your desires right away,” I tease, my fingers poking at his chest as I assert further. “I have my own terms.”

Ayaan’s eyes darken. He can read me like an open book and realises I mean every word I have just said.

“We’ll see,” he challenges, his eyes glinting with a promise of something much more. “For now, all I want is for you to become my wife and start a life with me under the same roof. The rest will automatically happen. The King is ready to plead for forgiveness. Let’s see how long my Queen can resist.”

I smile at his determination, and a playful thought pops in my head. I move closer, gazing at Ayaan’s lips, and when he thinks I’m going to kiss him, I tilt my head to whisper in his ear instead.

“Keep on dreaming,” I mutter, withdrawing myself from his hold. “King-8, Queen-7,” I tease before turning around and hurrying towards the door.

“You can’t add a point to your score for this,” he shouts from behind. “Not until you come back and complete the kiss first.”

“You do have high hopes,” I say, turning around, giggling all the way.

It’s indeed going to be one hell of a ride after we marry.

AYAAN

I slide into my car and start the engine, smiling at Meher’s antics. I am finally seeing the old Meher back after a long time. After that incident in Dalhousie, she had retreated into a shell and suppressed her mischievous nature. But she’s now making up for it by beating me in our scorecard. Not that I mind. But I had hoped to steal a moment with her inside the car today. However, as soon as I parked, she practically bolted out of it as though she could sense my intentions to draw her in for a kiss. She is determined to avoid me so no such opportunity arises. Let’s see for how long! I grin at that thought, tapping my fingers lightly against the steering wheel as I drive out of Walia House, deciding to check on my dad. It’s been more than an hour, and I hope he’s back home as promised. I’m about to dial him when my phone buzzes with an incoming call. It’s Ajay, the spy I had assigned to keep an eye on Dad’s movements.

I answer it and call it intuition or sixth sense, but I feel this call has unsettling news for me.

“What’s the update, Ajay?” I ask calmly, hiding my curiosity.

“Ayaan, your Dad has reached home safely,” he assures me.

I exhale in relief. But his next words take me by surprise.

“He went to Antop Hill,” Ajay continues, carefully choosing his words. “And he parked his car in a secluded area away from the main road. He got out, and then got into another white sedan that was already parked there.”

My grip tightens on the steering wheel, my mind racing to make sense of this unexpected news. Antop Hill? A secret meeting? I’m taken aback as I’ve never known my father to indulge in covert encounters like this. My thoughts race as I try to solve the mystery that’s suddenly unfolding before me.

“Did you see who was in that car?” I ask, barely concealing the urgency in my tone.

“No,” Ajay replies, regret evident in his voice. “The windows were tinted, and the car was too far away. I couldn’t make out any details. Since this looked a bit suspicious, I captured a few pictures on my phone from afar. I have already sent you those photos.”

I park my car at the side of the road, sit upright and check the pictures he has sent. It’s precisely what Ajay told me. The road is deserted, and Dad is seen getting down from his car and entering another white car. My mind swirls with possibilities. A secret meeting, a mysterious person—it’s a puzzle that has captured my full attention. Dad has always been straightforward and open with me, so this secrecy is unsettling.

Who could it be? What prompted this secret rendezvous? A multitude of questions and suspicions cloud my thoughts, and I find myself entangled in a web of intrigue that I hadn’t anticipated.

“Did you hear anything or see something else?” I press, hoping for any snippet of information that might shed light on this mystery.

Ajay’s response is negative. “I couldn’t hear their conversation. They were too far away and I didn’t notice anything suspicious either.”

I sigh, frustration mingling with intrigue.

“Alright, Ajay. Good job. I’ll call you back if needed.”
