“One mistake, yes, but the sheer number of them?” He almost shouts. “This has the stink of a human all over it.”

I eyeball him, hating where his mind is going. How do we figure out who it is in this short amount of time?

“You think this is done on purpose? Sabotage? Are you certain? You need to be certain!”

“I don’t know.” Darion growls and lets go of me. He paces the office, long strides back and forth. I hold my silence, the muscles in my back knot as I consider our options.

Lukas walks into the room and collapses on the couch. He looks exhausted.

“Where the fuck have you been?” Darion snarls.

Lukas jolts, sits upright, and turns to Darion.

“There’s a parade and roadworks and a few more guests in the travel party. I was running the routes, testing, and checking the surveillance teams. It’s taken all day and most of the night. I’m so sorry I didn’t report in,” Lukas snarls sarcastically.

“Where’s Missy?”

Lukas frowns. “She went out with Kandi, and then she normally…” he sits up and rubs his chest. The longer he thinks, the more he rocks. He squeezes his wrist hard and looks up, close to tears. “I didn’t see Kandi’s car. She wasn’t here. She isn’t here.” He whispers. “I can’t feel her through the bond.”

I reach for my phone and call Kandi. I call three times. My hands shake harder with each moment that passes.

“I’ve got a missed call from Missy really early this morning. It looks like 2.03am.” I say with a sinking feeling in my gut.

“Didn’t she come home?” Lukas whines.

“I thought she was in her room,” I say helplessly. “I didn’t want to wake her. So I put some take out in the fridge for her and came back to work.”

“I thought she was with you.” Darion says to Lukas. His voice is gray, emotionless.

I look up at Darion, and neither of us needs to say it.

He whirls around, his eyes wild, and walks out of the door.

“Who saw Kandi last?” His bellow sounds.

“She went out with Missy around 2pm, Sir. Uh, yesterday.”

“No one went home?” Lukas asks in horror. “No, no, no, no. This can’t be happening!”

Darion staggers. I see it from behind my desk. It pushes me into action. I go out to the hallway and see our staff staring up at us.

“Sven?” I call out.

He appears like a shadow at the back of the room.

“I need everyone to change focus for a few minutes. The omega Missy Clark is missing. As is Beta Kandi Hutchenson. Last seen at 2pm yesterday leaving headquarters. Find them.”

“But the Gala-“ Darion interrupts.

I whirl on Darion. “I don’t give a fuck about the Gala.”

He flinches like I’ve struck him. “But if it’s who we think, that’s where she’s going to be. He will sell her there.”

I feel sick. He’s right, I know he is, but I don’t want him to be. Just imagining our Missy vulnerable in front of those monsters…I narrow my eyes. I can see the fragile look on Darion’s face, but I just can’t right now. Missy is the most important thing.

“So…what are you suggesting?” Lukas snaps.

I lean on the railings and close my eyes, trying to swallow the panic that is threatening to choke me.
