The shape launches out of the dark. I duck, leaning backwards as the arm swipes harmlessly where my chest had been. I twist, landing on my hands and knees and kick up viciously, feeling bone break.

There’s a startled yelp, a wheeze, and then Seb hammers a savage punch to the head. I’m up before the unconscious body hits the floor. I stare at our fallen foe. A beta, the scent in the air tells me, around forty. Darion crouches and pulls off the man’s earpiece before crunching it in his hand.

A gasp has me turning. Further down the hall, another black clad man lets out an embarrassing whine before he stiffens, lifting a baton and swiping an arm across his face.

I can see his nerves, see his fear. I could almost let him go if he just agreed to sit down.

A third guard comes from inside a room, sees us, and steps into the hallway. This one isn’t afraid, this is the one that I won’t have mercy for. I stalk straight up to him, keeping my eyes on his face as he calls for identification.

His words barely make sense in my garbled mind.

He reaches for his gun at his hip too late. I lunge forward, slam his arm backwards and up, flipping him over to land hard on his back. I drop in a kneel on his throat.

“Where are they keeping the omega?”

He blinks up at me, terrified, and chokes, gagging. I lift my weight just a little and the moron reaches to get free. I slam my fist into his face.

“Where is my omega?” I shift so I’m straddling him and lift him by his shirt, shaking him hard. The movement snaps his teeth on his tongue, and when he coughs, blood sprays me. I don’t even care.

He tries to answer, but all that comes out is terrified babble. Darion drags me off the fool, and Seb sends the prick into another unwilling slumber.

The man standing with the baton has lowered it. His face is chalky white. I turn to him and bare my teeth.

“D-d-down, the h-hall.” He stutters out and drops the baton.

I surge forward, almost running. My omega is here, so close. She needs us. How dare they try to take what’s mine! All the hurts of a lifetime of abuse and neglect crystalise into this one thing that I realise I can’t live without. Her.

My existence flashes before my eyes. My shitty childhood, the stupid, dangerous risks I took, the need to feel something, anything. Constantly chasing the next thing that might make me feel anything. The answer I was searching for was here all along.

So what are you going to do to keep it?

I barely hesitate when I see five guards sitting at the end of a long hallway. I turn into the space, a red haze over my vision.

They catch sight of me and jump up, knocking chairs over. I can sense the confusion, the fear. Two of them step back, almost stumbling away. In any other situation, it might be comical.

“What the fuck?”

“Alert the boss!”

“Stay back! Do not come any closer.”

We ignore their shouting. I barely register their words.

I hear her cry out. Her voice. Real, not in my head, and it tips me over the edge. I let out a low, deep growl. Menacing and full of the promise of violence.

There is so much rage inside me. I hear my mother screaming, Darion, Seb, my own voice joins them, the sounds grow and grow until I think I’m going to go insane, and then it all goes quiet.

She, this omega, is our scent match, made for us. She smoothes all the rough edges. She banks the rage in me. She is my world. The past and my fear that I might fail isn’t going to stop me. The ghosts that haunt me won’t stop me. I’m going to get her back.

She screams again. I blink rapidly and let out another snarl.

Darion grips my arms and holds me. “Let's go, leave it. She’s waiting.”

I look around and find the five guards beaten to within an inch of their lives. Blood splatters the wall. I did that in my haze but I don’t even care.

I push open the door and find myself standing in the dark. In the middle of the room in a perspex box lit up by white floor lights is my omega on her knees, her knuckles deathly white, her clothes dirty, but her beautiful, stubborn face scowling at someone to my left.

I exhale, and her head snaps in my direction, tracing over me, then moving to Seb, and finally, Darion.
