“What happened?” Darion asks hoarsely. “Who had her?”

“We don't know. She won’t talk.” Missy says and closes her eyes. She looks, at that moment, purely exhausted and defeated.

My mother had the same look on her face right before she left me with my ass of a father. I get the feeling that Missy wouldn’t be the one to cut and run. No, she’d probably work herself into an early grave like Lukas’ mother.

“All right, let’s get out of here. We need to talk, and I don’t want to do it in front of all your gossipy neighbours.” Lukas snaps. He climbs in the car and starts it.

I open the door and all but shove Darion into the backseat, then slide in myself.

To my surprise, the omega climbs into the front seat and puts on her seatbelt. Lukas gives her a long look and then shrugs.

“Slumming it today, princess?”

She shrugs her shoulders. “I’ve got nothing better to do.”

I almost smile at the nonchalance in her tone. At the bravado. Lukas may meet his match in her.

“Ooh, I’m hungry. Can we stop somewhere to get some food?” Missy asks.

Lukas doesn’t answer her. Neither do I. Darion is still silent. The pain pouring off him makes my stomach clench.

Lukas sends the car careening down the street, and Missy turns in the seat to look at Darion.

The omega wrestles with something. I can see it. She turns to us, changes her mind, faces the front, growls, and turns back. Tension lines every inch of her body.

“I’m going to say this once, and then I don’t want to talk about it again with you, and I’m only doing it because I knew you were friends.”

Darion opens his eyes and stares at her.

“Trin said she was going to meet you, but I know she was meeting someone else. I don't know who. I should have followed her, but I had somewhere I needed to be.”

She’s holding a lot of something back, but I can’t feel or scent a lie off her. Her sorrow is thick, guilt, too, but no lies this time. She takes a deep breath and sort of centres herself.

“You’re going to help me fix her. You’re going to help me because I said so. I need a fake pack. It will help you, too. I need my family protected so Trinity can mend. That's the deal. I don’t want money, promises, or forever. I need your help until I can get them on their feet.”

“What if we say no?” Lukas snaps.

She turns a stony stare on Lukas. “You might be able to, but he,” she glances at Darion beside me, he’s staring back at her with venom in his eyes, “will help, and he knows why.”

I snap my head around to Darion and stare as his face darkens.

“Maybe there’s another solution,” I suggest quietly.

She barks out a laugh. “If you can find one, I’d love to hear it.”

“We could take you to an omega center. They can match you with an appropriate pack, provide living arrangements until you do.”

“Uh-huh, what about my family?” Missy asks in a sing-song voice.

“We can house them temporarily.”

“And when that temporary runs out, who’s going to work and support my family? Most new packs don’t want the additional burden of a whore, her idiot husband, and their three fucked up kids.”

I clench my hands in frustration. “We can get her help, doctors, shrinks, whatever she needs.”

“Yeah, you could do that, but we don't know if she needs protecting from someone.”

My mouth hangs open while I absorb that blow. Is Missy in danger living there? I squash the urge to interrogate her and find out just how much danger she’s in.
