“Yeah. No shit. I use all my ability to be articulate and thoughtful with the business, and when I come home…I have nothing.” I shake my head and rest my hands on my knees.

“She is going to go into heat, though, and soon. Do we have a plan?”

I tilt my head back and stare at the ceiling. “Yes. No. I don’t know. I know what we should do. I know what I want to do. And I can guess what she wants.”

“Yeah. Me, too.”

Lukas bursts into the room and flops down on both of us.

“Did you see it? It was awesome, and we did it.” He shouts and wiggles onto the floor, kneeling before us. “Okay, where’s my girl?”

I blink and see the same perplexed expression on Seb’s face that I’m sure is written all over mine.

“Haven’t you two been talking to her at all?”

I shake my head. “When? We’ve been busy.”

“Uh, notes, messages, emails, phone calls?” Lukas sits on the edge of the couch, leaning close. His whole body vibrates with tension.

Seb ducks his head. I just stare. “And you have?”

“Of course. She’s our omega. We took her from her family and dumped her here. She sold herself to us to save them…are you two saying you just completely ditched her?”

Lukas lifts his tattooed hands and runs his fingers through his hair. He looks completely smashed by our admission.

I hate the fact that I blush, but I can’t help but look towards the stairs. Shit. “In name only, we have a contract.” But my voice sounds weak, and the excuse doesn’t wash the same way it used to.

The door opens, and she comes down the stairs with all the bearing of a queen. She pauses on the second to last step.

“Lukas,” she whispers with fondness, with warmth. He rushes over and swings her down before hugging her tight.

“We did it. We got the job.”

I stiffen. Did he tell her about it? No, he wouldn’t.

“Congratulations,” she says softly, but she still refuses to look at me. I remember how slight she was in my arms. How soft she felt.

I stand up and force myself to cross over to stand in front of her.

“I’m sorry.”

She blinks. “For what?”

“For abandoning you. For implying you were a problem. You’re not. I mean, your heat is a problem, but more for you than for us. We just wanted to help you.” I cut off my rambling.

She looks away. “Thanks. I know I’m a problem, though, that was a fair point. I…” she looks up at me, blinks several times and then bursts into tears. “Sorry, they said this was a part of it, but I’m struggling to control it.” Her shoulders curl in, and her voice is more defensive than I’ve ever heard.

There’s a moment of panic before my instincts kick in, and I tug her into my arms. She fights and then inhales and goes still. “All right, tell me what’s wrong. Let’s see if we can make things easier. I’m very good at sorting things out. It's kinda my job.” I frantically rub circles on her back. “And you’re not a problem. Not really. Not at all. We can handle it. Just tell us what you need.”

Lukas gives me a thumbs up and a huge smile. I make a note to hit him later.

“No, you’re celebrating.”

“We can celebrate anytime, talk to us.”

“I’m just weepy.”

“And?”
