I open my mouth to argue with him, but I can’t. I have sold myself just for the survival of my family.

I squeeze my eyes closed as a wave of shame hits me in the gut.

My eyes pop open when I feel him move towards me. He gently, slowly moves his arms around me, giving me time to decide if I want to escape his hug.

I don’t want to escape. I want his hug more than I should, so I bury my nose in his chest as one of his huge hands strokes down my back.

“I didn’t mean to make you feel bad, Missy. We all do what we need to do to survive. I wasn’t…damn it, this is why I don’t talk.”

“No, I like it. It just hit me hard, everything and all that. I enjoy hearing you talk, listening to what you think.”

His arms tighten around me for a moment before he lets go and turns.

Darion stands in a bedroom doorway, watching us. “Am I interrupting?”

“No.” I blurt.

He nods and crosses to the fridge. I try really hard not to notice his low slung gray track pants and the miles of bronzed abs and back muscles that are on display.

The man is an ass. I’m sure he comes with a certificate that says so, but he is a fine specimen. Like, even as angry at him as I am, I have a moment where I watch him move with pure appreciation.

Seb steps into my line of sight with his hand covering his mouth. I narrow my eyes and make a motion with my hand across my throat. That causes his shoulders to shake, and I turn away from both men with a tiny smile.

“So, why are we out here?” Darion asks as he eats what looks like shaved cardboard in a bowl of milk.

“Well, we, the people of the universe, decided that we needed to hide from your fat head before it exploded and gave us all hives.” Lukas barks at him as he comes into the room from the direction of the nest. My heart jolts at the sound of his voice, but seeing him makes my knees weak. He’s wearing a pair of jeans low on his hips, and in the light, seeing all those tattoos, so much colour. I want to trace them with my tongue. Everything about Lukas is so much larger than life.

Darion merely lifts a haughty eyebrow. “That so?”

“Uh hmm.” Lukas purrs and slinks towards me, his hands capturing my hips before he slides his lips against mine in a kiss that leaves me wanting. “Good morning, Kitten.”

“Morning, Lukas.” My voice sounds all breathy.

“Did you sleep well?”

“I did.” Yes, better than I have in ages, longer than I can remember, because last night was the first night I felt safe in so long.

He presses another kiss to my forehead and moves to the fridge.

“So, we need to go back to town today. We have a meeting.” Darion says calmly.

“Go on your own,” Lukas says evenly.

Darion almost drops his bowl. “Lukas,” he warns.

“Nah, we played this your way. Now I’m playing by my rules.” Lukas growls.

Darion holds perfectly still. “Seb?”

“We have some things we need to address as a pack.”

Darion shakes his head. “No, we don’t.”

Seb just stares at him.

“Fine. I’ll go on my own.” Darion explodes.

I can’t help but see the disappointment in Seb’s gaze. Lukas slams the fridge shut and advances on Darion.
