“This game is bullshit, D.”

“This is not a game. This is our lives, our reputations, our dreams on the line. I won’t allow everything we’ve worked for to slip through our fingers. I need this. We need this.”

Seb sighs, sounding exhausted. “We can’t be the ones rescuing everyone forever. I want a life, a home, Darion. I’m tired.”

I don’t know if Darion heard him, but I did.

Lukas’ eyes flare brighter. He brushes his white hair back and leans in even closer to Darion, it almost looks like they’re going to kiss, but the rage coming off the two men, Darion ice cold and Lukas a raging inferno, is enough that I let out a small sound of protest.

Three heads turn to look at me, and I suddenly wish I hadn’t made a sound at all. The power of the combined stares makes my knees weak and my stomach clench, not in anxiety, but in something akin to excitement. I suddenly understand why people like seeing those underground fights.

I tear my eyes away from the three of them and clear my throat. “I’m just going to go…uh, look outside at the outside, and you can fight, I mean talk.”

I walk, not run, to the front door and slip outside. I freeze once the door closes. Shit. They are having serious issues, and I’m panting and dreaming of the fastest way to get them naked. Is there no end to how mortifying this morning is going to be?

I hear the door and turn, but Darion slams into me, anyway. I waver, windmilling one arm, poised in space, but then I tilt too far, and I begin to fall.

Darion catches me by the upper arms, yanking me back towards him. My heart thuds in my chest, but his scent wraps around me. I want to hate this man, but I can’t.

“You okay?” He asks.

I nod. “Fine. Thank you.”

Our eyes lock, and I can’t look away. He seems like so much more, kinder.

“I’m sorry for ruining your dinner last night.” I mumble.

He blinks. “I told you to stop apologising. Why did you leave?”

It’s my turn to blink. He seems completely confused. “You asked me to do one thing for you, to give you legitimacy. But the way you were with that omega... you made me look like an idiot. I staked a claim, and you publicly rejected it.”

He opens his mouth to argue, but the words die away. I can see him replaying last night in his head over and over.

“You were embarrassed?”

“Yes.”

“It’s about the contract?”

I hesitate and decide to lie. “Yes.”

“Oh.” His relief makes me feel sick. “That was a misunderstanding. Madeline is different. She’s special.”

I recoil, pulling myself out of his arms. I search frantically for the right words. “Oh, okay.”

He laughs, and the smile makes him look gorgeous. I just wonder why it’s hurting me so much.

“Well, enjoy the countryside. I’ll see you tonight.” He chuckles as he goes to his car, pulling a singlet from his pants pocket and dragging it on before sliding behind the wheel and vanishing in a cloud of dust.

What the hell just happened?

Seb comes outside but leans on the door, not pressuring me to turn around or face him.

“Madeline is special.” I say the words and choke on them. “How can you three be at such differing opinions of what you want? Do you even talk to each other anymore?” I’m horrified because I could feel Lukas and Seb’s disgust at the omega last night. The idea of seeing them locked to someone who made them so miserable is enraging.

It’s Lukas who answers. “Not really, no. We work. We fuck, but we don’t really talk.”

“Maybe you should try it, or you might end up with Madeline as your omega.” I stalk past the two of them and into the house.
