Lukas catches my arm and stops me. “That’s not the omega for me,” he says, leaving me with no illusions about who he really wants.

“The contract-“

“Missy, fuck the contract!”

I break out of his hold, stepping back, putting more and more space between us until I turn and run. The whole place belongs to them. There’s nowhere for me to hide. I let my instincts guide me and find myself in a bathroom behind a locked door, staring at myself in the mirror.

My ginger hair is a fucking mess. My eyes are red-rimmed, mascara lines down my cheeks. Nothing special. Nothing special at all. I glare at myself and then turn and get in the shower.

Lukas’ declaration and Seb’s words are at odds with Darion’s careless comment. The pull of the alphas is strong, stronger than I can fight. But I’m nothing special. It’s a message that’s been repeated over and over. Now that I see what I want…I’m terrified of losing it.

Maybe if I scrub hard enough, I can make it stop hurting, make the memory of those scars magically disappear.

Missy

The peace of this place almost makes me crawl out of the funk I’ve found myself in, almost. But I can’t quite erase the emotional bruises from yesterday.

Seb and Lukas have shifted gears, and I find them hunting me down all over the property, checking on me, caring for me. I once scoffed at the thought of enjoying this kind of attention, but it’s a balm to an open wound I didn’t know I had.

Both of them have different tactics, and when I questioned them, I discovered it’s simply who they are, but Lukas brings me gifts that are thoughtful and sweet. Daisies from outside in the garden, paper cranes, lollies, his favourite comic books. He sits with me and tells me stories that make me laugh and smile.

Sebastian brings me cut up apples, biscuits he baked, sandwiches, hot chocolate, a paperback novel, knitted blankets that smell like him, and pillows that smell like Lukas. He sits in the room and lets me lean against him and is content in the silence.

I wonder what gifts Darion would bring and then curse myself.

I’m holding my peace, not fighting them, but not giving in to their advances, either. I’m a rock, a mountain, and I will be strong. In my mind’s eye, I keep seeing Darion’s smile yesterday and how beautiful he looked. I wished that smile was for me.

I’m in so much trouble here.

I rub my forehead and spot Lukas in the doorway. His eyes are so sad that I can’t resist the small sound of protest from my throat. He walks to me and practically falls to his knees.

“What can I do to make it better?” he says and nuzzles into my neck.

Seb clears his throat, giving Lukas time to withdraw a moment before Darion bursts into the room, smiling widely.

“I come bearing gifts.”

My heart perks up even though I tell it viciously not to be so stupid.

He walks around the couch and sits beside me. “Your sister gave me this to give to you.”

“You saw Elise?”

“Trin,” he corrects.

My elation fades to caution. “Ah, how is she?” If he notices my reservations, he doesn’t say anything.

“Read for yourself.” He passes me an envelope.

I carefully unseal it, glancing at his cheerful expression. I read the words carefully, my heart sinking heavier and heavier. The letter is all about Darion, the gifts he’s brought her, the kindness he’s shown her, how he took her to dinner and ice-cream, the things he said.

Lukas snatches the letter out of my hands and turns away. His shoulders stiffen until he’s shaking. He passes it to Seb.

“What?” Darion snaps.

I hate that the mood is ruined.
