She tastes of pancakes and sugar. She’s so soft, so responsive. Her mouth opens, and I take. I take until both of us are gasping for air, and only then do I break away, resting my forehead against hers and admit the truth, to myself, in my head, that, yes…I’m lost for her. She is it for me.

With desperation, I kiss her again until time has no meaning, and I forget to be afraid of what I might lose.

Darion eyes me from the other side of the roof. I almost turn and leave, but fuck that. I walk to my spot and sit down where I can watch the sunrise. Seb is still asleep in his room where I left him, I can still taste him, my lips are swollen still from his kisses. I got drunk on him. But Darion is a whole new beast. I feel him, that potent power, then I catch his scent. He stands right beside me, almost touching, staring at the spot where the sun will appear.

“I’m sorry for shouting at you.”

I raise an eyebrow. “But not for the content?”

He opens his mouth and closes it, shakes his head. “No, not for the content. Yarek is a bad guy. You should be more careful-”

“I’m more than just an omega!” I snap.

“Yeah, you’re someone without many ties to a world that will miss you. You’re a woman in a bad neighbourhood, you’re without a phone, help, or weapons. It doesn’t matter if you were an alpha. It was dangerous and stupid.”

My face burns, and every single one of his words hits home. I despise how much his argument makes sense and the guilt it evokes. It just makes me even more furious.

“Fine, I should have been more careful, but you didn’t need to be such a dick.”

“How was I a dick? Madeline is a part of our plan, we need her, and I did the right thing as a friend and saw Trinity.”

I stand up straight and face him. “You don’t know anything.” It’s a stupid argument, but I can’t seem to help myself around him. He drives me crazy.

“Are you jealous?” He scoffs, his eyes widen as the silence lengthens between us.

I let out a wordless shout. “Hell would freeze over first, you conceited ass.” I manage to get out after a pregnant delay.

“Well, what is it?”

He’s so honestly confused that it takes the wind out of my sails.

“Why the fuck do you hate me so much, Darion?”

He freezes, his face going slack with surprise. “What?”

“Why do you hate me?” I grit out. “Why dress me up only to make me look like a piece of trash? Why are you so hot and cold all the time, and why am I here when it’s Trin who should be?”

“What are you even talking about? You aren’t trash. And Trin should definitely not be here.”

I shove his chest. “What is going on with you? Everything you say contradicts what you do.”

“What? I don’t understand.”

I snarl at him. The pain is too much, it’s too fresh and new, and I can’t talk to him without wanting what I can’t have. “And this constant talking down to me, like I’m inconvenient and messing up everything, try to imagine for a moment how I’m feeling.”

He blinks at me. “You don’t mess everything up.”

“Then why do you treat me like I do?” I scream at him.

His eyes narrow, and he reaches out and snags my wrist before I can put it behind my back. He drags me into the house, down to the lounge, and shoves me gently onto it. He sits opposite me and steeples his fingers.

“Tell me about your family.”

I scoff. “It doesn’t matter.”
