“Yes, it does. Have they called, messaged, any of them? Since we spoke of it?”

I look away. “No. None. When I went there, my parents said they needed a fresh start. They don’t want me to visit. I’ve been keeping tabs, and my dad keeps failing the job interviews. If he doesn’t get a job…I don’t know what I’ll do, guess I’ll beg you for more time.”

Darion reaches out and puts his fingers on my knees, stopping the bouncing.

“Do you want me to throw them out?”

I whip my head back towards him. “No,” I whisper, appalled.

“So, what do you want to do about them?”

“I want them to be okay. If that’s without me, then I guess that’s what it is. But I don’t want to keep using you, either.”

I’m broken and lost and there is no winning. But this alpha is staring at me like he gives a damn, which is so confusing.

He stares at me. “Missy, if you want me to, I will destroy them for you.”

I stare at him, aware of my heart pounding in my body, my stomach fluttering, and a strange warmth rushing through me. Was that one of the sexiest things I’ve ever heard? Yes. Fuck.

“I…uh, thank you.” I say belatedly. My mind is racing, and I can’t stop staring at his intense blue eyes. So serious, so earnest.

“I’m the only child of two parents who didn’t like each other. They got married because of me. They took their hatred of their lives out on me. I didn’t know what family was until Seb and Lukas. By the age of eleven, I was mostly living on the streets, returning only when I had to. I came home one day, and they were gone, just gone, no note, nothing.” He reaches out and grips my wrist, swiping my pulse with the pad of his thumb. “If you want me to, I will happily destroy your parents for you. I will do this because I found them, and I destroyed my parents. I ruined their lives, I found Seb’s father, and I made sure he will always look over his shoulder, and then I found Lukas’ parents, and I made them suffer.”

“Darion,” I whisper, my throat thick.

“You deserve better. Let me destroy your enemies for you.”

I shake my head. “You,” I take a breath, trying to clear the cobwebs from my head, “you have more important things to deal with, like Madeline.”

“Madeline is nothing. She has no brain, no compassion, nothing interesting about her whatsoever. She is simply bringing me information for a job. When I said special, I mean the information, not the girl. She’s vapid, offensive, and whenever she touches me, I daydream about putting her in an acid bath.” He leans closer, his thumb moving lazily. “Let me take care of you.”

I swallow hard. “I don’t care about them,” I lie.

He almost smiles. “It’s my job to take care of this pack, and I know that you do.”

“And Trin?”

He closes his eyes. “Trin is complicated. One of those ‘I can’t tell you’ subjects.”

“Are you in love with her?” I can’t help the little bit of bitterness in my voice. I know I’ve asked him, but I need to make sure.

His eyes pop open. “No, god, no. I explained this before. It’s friendship with a healthy dollop of guilt and a business interaction.”

I lick my lips and study him.Fuck, he’s hot. No, bad Missy. “Why are you doing this?”

“Because I think, perhaps, I come across the wrong way.” He searches for words, and for once, he looks uncertain and confused. “No, Seb told me outright that I come across like a dick.”

“What do you want from me?”

His eyes close. “That is a loaded question. I know what I should say. I know what Lukas and Seb want, but I don’t really know what I want.”

I’m confused. I think we’re having two different conversations, and I’m not privy to the information on one side.

“Oma would say you should take the time to search your head and heart.” I quote him because I have no idea what else to say.

His confusion clears, and then he breaks into one of those knee-weakening smiles. “Of course, she does.”

He stares at me for a long moment. “I need to change the subject. Your heat is coming up.”
