“Catch you tomorrow, Ava.”

“Have a good night, and sleep in if you need it.”

I laugh at her and wave as I make my way towards the office.

I love my alphas. I really do, but Scarlet is something else. I don’t feel sexual attraction to her, but I feel safe with her. She could have been one of my alphas. I’m honest enough to admit it. I could have been happy with her. Right now, I see a lonely alpha with the world on her shoulders, and I want to ease her burden.

“Scarlet? Why are you here? We didn’t have a meeting, did we?”

She shakes her black hair and smiles. “Don’t stress, Missy. I came without a prearranged meeting. Like to keep Darion on his toes.”

“Oh.”

“My pack has requested a meeting, and I needed to drop a file off for Darion. So I figured I would kill two birds.”

Requested a meeting? That sounds odd. “I didn’t know you had a pack.” I feel bad about that, too, like it’s something I should have known.

“We don’t have an omega, it’s just me and a couple of alphas.”

“And no pack bonds?” I ask curiously then flush, wishing I could bite my tongue. “Sorry, I’m so sorry.”

Scarlet laughs. “It’s okay. No bonds. I have no desire to bond with them. Plus, it would destroy him…” Scarlet trails off and shakes her head.

I let out a relieved sigh. “Okay.” I wonder who the he is that makes her voice go soft like that.

Scarlet hesitates and then wraps me in a hug that makes two of my alphas let out deep growls. We ignore them.

“I’ll see you after it’s all over,” Scarlet murmurs. “You stay safe, Missy.”

“I will. You, too.”

Her phone beeps, and she glances at it and sighs. “Anyone want to help me bury my pack?”

“I will!” I volunteer.

“She will not.” Darion snaps. “Kill them tomorrow, and we’ll all help you. Missy can supervise.”

Scarlet looks momentarily shocked, then pleased. “Thanks, Darion.”

“You’re welcome, Scarlet.”

“If you need me any time, day or night, call. That goes for all of you.” Scarlet says. She hesitates and then hugs Seb. I feel a twinge of jealousy, but it fades quickly, and then she’s gone.

“Is there a reason she’s not coming back?” I ask after a while.

“Yes. We don’t want to create patterns, and Scarlet stands out. Luckily, she often throws parties, and we can say we were working out security for those nights. But we’ve already had her here too often.” Darion says distractedly. He moves around to his desk and starts going through his drawers, muttering under his breath.

I nod sadly. “Fair.”

He flops down in one of the armchairs and tugs me onto his lap. I lay my head on his shoulder and yawn.

“Tired?” he asks with a smirk as he holds me tighter.

“Darion and I were talking last night. He was telling me about his friendship with Trin.”

“Yeah?”

“I’m not jealous. Not anymore. He really does feel nothing but friendship with her. It’s a relief.”
